Ive always been into being healthy, and reading about health topics since early in highschool. Anyways, since Ive started my new job, Ive put on 20 pounds. Blah. Anyways, Ive been lazy on watching what I eat, hence why Ive put on the 20 extra pounds, and not working out much lately has also helped. Anyways, Im not wanting to just "diet" since usually when people do this, and get to a point where they want to be, they usually go back to their old habits and gain the weight back, if not more. So, I want to make that change in my lifestyle and just eat better all-together. Now, Ive been reading a lot last couple days on the internet, bout different diet ideas and the such. Now I know I said I dont want to diet, but I would like to maybe diet for a week or two just to jumpstart myself on eating better. Ive been making some spreadsheets on some foods nutritional info, and diet foods. Like, made up a chart of low carb foods and other things. So, I guess the reason behind this post is, for the people who have actually used diets, what has worked well for you? Im just curious as to hear different peoples opinions and what they did. Plus its kinda nice when you tell other people about what you did and realize what you lost.

I've never been on a diet, but I've been hearing a lot lately about the "raw food diet" where you pretty much don't cook anything you eat. A few people that I know that have tried it said it works really well and you loose weight pretty fast, but when you first get on it, you get sick, because your body isn't used to the raw meat. The best way to just loose weight is to jog. Not run or walk but just a light jog because it works out the most amount of muscles. A light jog every morning or evening is a great way to relax and get into shape :]

Yeah, I was fine when I was actually going out and jogging 3 nights a week. Just been so lazy this summer bout getting out and doing it. Raw food diet? No thanks. I prefer my chicken and other meats cooked. Dont feel like dying.

hey man...i am in EXACTLY the same boat as you...i work in a restaurant kitchen as well...so the free meal and the cooks tossing their "experiements" at you to try doesnt work well either...i find the best way is to just eat healthy and allow yourself to indulge for one or two meals a week...you need to otherwise youll hit a point where you will just go apesh!it and eat everything in sight...the big thing is willpower at the grocery store...if you dont have crap food in your house howre going to eat it? unless of course you live near a wendys then you just have to walk past that place..smoothies are awesome especially for breakfast...i found they filled me up...once you get back to the gym start tossing some whey protein powder in there...i use Strive Pro Iso...dont just mix it with milk...it tastes ok but not fantastic...make a protein shake out of it...you should be eating foods high in protein right now anyways..your body needs it...also get your a$$ back to the gym...i find having a gym close at hand works really well...i used to go to a gym within walking distance and i would be there 5 days a week without fail...plus the walk was a good cardio warm up...once you get to a gym that you have to drive to you have more excuses not to go...traffic...just no time to get there and back before work/before a committment, etc...speaking from experience once you get into a workout rut it is tough to get back into the swing of things...you just gotta get back to that gym and give'r...plus you have to realize that its going to take a while for that excess weight to drop...it takes a lot less time to pack on fat than it does muscle/to lose fat...but if you stick to it you can do eet...one more thing them i am out...swimming is the king of exercise for fat loss...especially if coupled with cardio...it is extremely low impact and is a full body workout...if you can find a pool and know how to swim do it up man...the fat will melt away especially if you do it post workout...the key is also to pace yourself especially if youre swimming...ok...hope at least some of that help...and remember...keep fit and have fun!

The exact same thing happened to me. I dropped 20lbs in about two and half months following these eating habits.
Breakfast: I would have a Arizona green tea, a sugar free red bull, and some oatmeal. I read before that green tea and red bull speeds up your metabolism.
Lunch: I would eat some kind of fish, usually tuna or baked cod and a side of cottage cheese.
Dinner: For dinner I would eat mainly grilled chicken breast and occasionally a steak. As far as sides go, I would have a salad and a vegetable, and if I was really hungry I would eat more cottage cheese.
I drank lots of water throughout the day and with my meals. The only time I didn't drink water was for breakfast. I think the key is not to snack. I never snacked between meals and just stuck to them. As far as exercise goes, I skated about 4 - 5 days a week. Never ran or lifted any weights, just skated.
This worked for me and one of my friends. She got the freshman 15 and wanted to drop some lbs. So she followed this diet and jogged 3 -4 days a week and she lost the weight she wanted.

I know the reaction to this everytime I suggest it, but I'll do it anyway.
Try and cut down on your red meats as much as you can, and dishes that contain a lot of fat. Substitute them for some vegeterian dishes along with seafood and stuff like swift was saying. Along with that you should try and get into working out daily and just keep with it. That's the biggest thing. Its not just going to happen. Could take a week to see results, could take a month...you never know.
Plus vitamins and suppliments in the morning/at night will help with different things too. Good luck dude.

Stop eating fast food, don't drink soda, and try to eat fewer processed foods. Try to exercise as often as you can, and when you can't, at least get out of the house and office and just do stuff. Park further away in order to walk more and take the stairs instead of elevator. These are just small steps that'll get you healthier and lose weight gradually in a healthy way. It's what I've been doing, and I've been losing weight steadily for about a year and a half. I've lost about 40 lbs. I've also gained more muscle when going to the gym, doing pushups, jogging, and other simple exercises.

I've lost 5 pounds in the last month or so just by cutting out soda and exercising regularly (running everyday after work/school, lifting 4-5 times a week) but i still eat yodels almost daily.

First off, to the Canuck, I have no idea where you got the idea I work in a kitchen? Im in research and development, and not for the kitchen. Swift, I like your idea, although I will admit, when I was eating better and working out, I ate 5-6 smaller meals through-out the day with working out, and I never felt very hungry or anything. Thing is, I know what I have to do, I just like to hear what other people do/have done, and basically is a bit more motivation for I to get up and start working out again. I do miss the gym, but will not sign a contract with those shady fuk's anymore. If I could do a month to month deal, I would. But can't seem to find one that will do it.:(

cut out soda. basicilly i heard that for each can of soda 12 fl oz., they put 1/3 cup of pure sugar into it. it may not sound like alot but go find a 1/3 cup and fill it with pure sugar and imagine drinking that. Now i only drink water/ice tea. Also try to eat less fast food. with our american society we eat fast food like its a religion. i sitll each fast food but instead of getting like a freakin big mac/ ill get the chicken and pass on the fries and get a water or a lemonade. the chicken is still bad for you but not as bad as a big mac. go to wendys. they have awesome salads! just dont pig out on the dressin and youll be fine. ive lost about 10 lbs already in the summer without working out regular. no time. no soda. less fast food. = more money to spend on SBA gear. ha

Three letters: DDR. I'll say it again, even though I already told you before. Great, fun way to get exercise. Also, stop drinking any soda (even diet), anything with sodium increases your water weight. That's the reason why when people quit drinking soda, they lose up to 5 pounds or so. Ditch the steaks, burgers, pork, ham, you know what I mean..eat chicken, or fish, or shrimp. Oh, and get light dressing. Dressing makes any salad taste great :) Instead of pouring it out of the bottle, pour it into the cap then into the salad. You need about 64 oz of water a day, more if you weigh more. 64oz is about the equivalent of 4 poland springs bottles. Eat foods for snacks that require more energy to digest and absorb than the actual foods have (sometimes called "negative calorie foods")
I'm not a big fan of the "If I'm being healthy I'm allowed to indulge once a week/month/some time period" mentality. Maybe it's just me, but if you think that, then you usually end up "indulging" way more often then you say you will...and you'll run into something delicious and tell yourself "it's just this once, it's no big deal" then two days later the same thing happens. If you want a healthy lifestyle, commit to one. You'll find that a lot of healthy foods do taste good (i.e. I love strawberries :))

First, I know what to and what not to eat. Second, have you ever looked to see how many calories and other crap is in a fast food salad? Sorry, but those are just as unhealthy as the burgers.

I agree on the commit part and everything. Lots of people are like, oh its only this once. And 3 days later they are doing it again. Oh dont worry, Im gonna run a mile or two tonight. Just doesnt happen. Lots of healthy foods taste great I think. Its just hard to eat the way I want to every night while living with my parents and brother, who is beginning to become quite the porker himself. But Im slowly starting to buy my own groceries and other crap.

yes i do know that the salads are bad for you. but i dont need dressin on a chicken salad to eat it and they do they have less calories that food that they offer there.

aww someone's growing up :]
Fruits and Veggies!! My family always had a rule that no matter what we had for dinner there was always a vegetable. So i love them, well most of them atleast. If you know your gunna have a busy day pack a snack. Some carrots or strawberries [although the don't travel well] and when you feel the need to snack, you have a healthy one right there.

Blah, dad said I can stay long as I want if Im in school, so I figured why not if I can save a sh!t ton of money and buy the toys I want. Also said he gonna move prob within the next 5 years, and would offer me the house for cheap, so if I can get him to go ahead and get out soon, Im not even going to bother movin out. I never ate half the crap I eat now, funny how your taste changes as you get older, and mine has for the better.

I'm not the type of person who really needs to diet..
[not said in a concieted way]
I play on three different teams and board so im constantly active but during the school year i tend to go overboard. for example, i had either burger king or mickeyd's every single day last year for lunch. so i'm starting to realize i need to start eating healthier or else things will catch up with me. because of my work schedule i miss wayyy too many meals. wooo new example. today i worked from 6:45am until 3pm...didn't get home until around 3:15 and had to leave for a game at 3:45. i got home from my game a little before 7 and got my first meal of my day. pizza. because of my schedule my choice of foods is limited, so i keep granola bars and such in my car so i can eat one while i'm traveling. but like dcrida im drinking water and ice tea all day to keep myself hydrated. so stop sitting on SBA, get a bottle of water, and go jog around the block
for all that writing it was pretty pointless...the last line is the most important

Yeah, I've been drinking way too much beer lately. I really need to cut down. I've never drank this often in my life. But I mean, I've been working hard moving people and other random odd jobs, and sh*t wears you out. And when you get home, you just want a good meal and a beer.

Know what you are feeling! Once I turned 30, my metabolism went down the sh***er!!! Cut out the soda! I drink 4-5 Nalgene's full of H2O a day. Use lemon juice to break up the monotony of water. I eat 4-6 small meals a day to help keep your metabolism up. Never skip breakfast! Eat a lot of veggies: not the canned stuff. Steam your veggies so as not to lose vitamins. Fish and seafood are great, there are tons of ways to cook chicken. Easy on the red meat. Avoid a lot of "fat free" stuff...usually contains a lot of sugar to make it taste better.
Don't forget to work out. If you're chunky, do a lot of reps with little weight. Don't forget the cardio. Usually, I'll hop on the elliptical for 15 min before I lift then end my workout with 30-45 min. Good luck!

I know a lot of people have different views on the low weight, high reps vs. high weight low rep. Even if you are a bit chunky and still trying to lose weight, I would stick with high weight low reps. Unless you are seriously overweight, then you need to build the stamina. But Ive NEVER done low weight high reps. Cept when we tossed it in circuits for football.

I usually do greater reps with lower weight because I'm trying to gain more stanima than muscle and get more toned. There are some exercises that I do heavy weights. I should note, I don't do light weights with high reps, more like medium weights with a higher number of reps.
