Going to be there from the 2nd to the 6th and wondering what I can expect when I'm out there. I'm thinking spring conditions? Hopefully it doesn't suck.

i rode the best powder of my life at kirkwood in the middle of april 2 years ago. but that was a freak winter where it snowed almost every day in march and april and keep snowing untill june.

most likely it will be spring slush or packed down powder. at least this year the resort have enough snow to build full on parks and they should keep them up for the rest of the year. but hopefully this year will be like 2 years ago and there will be some powder left for spring.

Good news, this year we had such massive dumpage through January that we still have a fairly decent snowpack as of today. Even though the temps are starting to rise up into the 50's during the day, it is still freezing each night allowing a limited melting period. On and off for the last month some mellow spring storms have moved through, throwing down a few inches of powder for a couple days, and keeping the snowpack cool which has been helping to prolong the season. My little brother is coming up here to ride on 4/7 and i've already told him that i'm confident there will be decent skiing, mainly at higher elevations so check out Squaw, Alpine, or Sugar Bowl on the North Lake, I defintely wouldn't bother with Northstar that late if they are still even running. But ideally the classic Tahoe backcountry season is still in full swing at that time, as of today most trailhead access from the roads is still snowcovered the entire way, but the mud season is definitely looming down here at lake elevation this moment.
Hope I have been helpfull without being too broad. Good luck on your trip up to Tahoe. ~Rob

gavn - where are you gonna be riding? it might be cheaper to get a spring pass... like kirkwood's is $99, and squaw's is $179. pays for itself in a few days.

Not sure where we are going exactly. We'll be there for 4 days, so we have options. I think Kirkwood and Heavenly are on most people's lists. Any recommendations on where else to go and how to get cheap lift tickets? Maybe night life?

cheap lift tickets... you could try craigslist. some people i know have been getting them for various resorts for around $40, since the season is ending and the weekend warriors are trying to get rid of tickets they bought but won't get around to using.

Any mountains that you would recommend other than Heavenly and Kirkwood?

what kind of terrian do you want to ride?

i'm assuming you're going to be in south lake... but it all depends what you like to ride, really.

kirkwood is pretty good for just riding around.

sierra is pretty good for park stuff (i haven't been there in a month or so, though, so i dunno what the setups are like right now), but the lifts accessing them suck.

The group that I'm with is pretty varied so it would be good if it was friendly to all skill levels. I don't think anyone really rides park or has even been in the park other than me. I love glades, though not sure if anyone else does. I would pretty much go wherever the best snow is.

What would you say is good if park wasn't a huge priority?

Edit - Yes, I'll be in South Lake.

looks like you've already hit the nail on the head with kirkwood then.

definitly kirkwood if you dont want to ride park. its backside it really fun on sunny days and chair 6 six offers some great terrain if you are willing to hike.

heavenly has some great runs and the most amazing views you will ever see but tons of people including me dont like the mountain because there are tons of flat spots and it just doesnt flow very well, not to mentions it will be packed with tourist.

sierra has the best parks in south shore and that is its best quality but it has a pretty good mountain too. it works well for groups of mixed abilities because the lifts that access the hard terrain are the same as some of the easier terrian.

agreed... also, the easier runs (like sugar and spice) have harder parts that rejoin the easier run later. so you can stay with your friends for a bit, ditch them for a bit, and then they'll run into you later in the run (if you feel like waiting for them).

what the hell happened to the park that's right off nob hill, going down the front of the mtn? the took it out after the beginning of the season and it hasn't been back since. :( i used to love the setup they had there last season.

they put that one up in the early season untill they get the ally ready. but i agree its a great park and they should keep it open all season i loved the down rail that was in that park.

bashful is my favorite park at sierra that jump line is one of the best ive ridden in tahoe.

I'm in Tahoe now and we did our first day at Sierra because some locals told us it was good. So we went there instead of Kirkwood as we originally planned. Definitely a good time with some great views. Doing Heavenly tomorrow, and Kirkwood on Saturday, but wouldn't mind going back to Sierra on Sunday.

if you go back and you haven't done so already, eat lunch on the deck at the top of grand view. mid winter (and probably now, too), when all the surrounding mountains are still covered in white, it's a ****ing awesome view. whenever i go up with people who aren't from around here or don't go to sierra much, i take 'em up there.
