basically because i work on the local artificial slope i get free lessons so i took advantage... i've been trying to clean up my technique as i want to start freestyling soon, and the most people we see tank on freestyle nights are the folks with the bad technique... obviously!

Steve, who was the instructor, and i just went on the slope for say 45 mins or so and he's like "yeh good blah blah, using your weight instead of throwing your body about, nice to watch someone with such a clean technique"

BUT

he says i twist my back hip round when i'm on my toe edge, which now because i'm aware of it i notice when i do and dont do it. i think i do it to look over my shoulder but i dont really know
i sometimes lean on my back foot when i'm doing this too, which i already knew i was doing, but its not often

any ideas how to fix this?

thanks

I'll help with your body position... oh yeah...

it sounds like he had you starting to work on turn overs or more core carved turns. dont worry about the hip thing... it the same thing i got gigged on my last riding exam for my certification.

easy exercises to help correct this. concentrate on only using your legs to turn. take your front hand and pretend your dribbling a basketball directly in front of you. While you exit and enter turns watch to see where your hand ends up.

But that is a good one to start with. Dont worry too much about the weight shift, that is happening because of the torso rotation.

Sounds like it might be chick hip. We actually did an article about this on Shred Betties awhile back; maybe it will help!

i just read the article and yeh i have actually noticed that in chicks riding on our slope BUT i'm more emm... dont really know how to put it... when i'm on my toe edge its not a shift of my weight as such but instead of my hips and shoulders being in line with the board, my back hip is twisted slightly in front of the board like slightly forward over the toe edge, not towards the nose or the tail
the only thing suggested to me was gripping my jacket just below my back underarm with my front hand and gripping down the seam of my trousers with my back hand, but its very hard to balance doing that!

Yeah this happens a lot more when people are on their toeside because they just want to see what's below them. It sounds like it's just an issue of keeping your body in line with your board. There are a variety of things different people do to try and correct it..I know someone who teaches the 'grab the back shoulder with the front arm'..sometimes I have people grab the back of their pants between their knees and their butt. Half of it is just being comfortable. Next time you go down the hill, think through what you're doing with your feet/knees and grab your pants if you need to.

yeh i've been watching everyone really closely on the slopes now haha! there's quite a lot of folk that do it!
i worked really hard today on trying to fix it and i think its coming... i might try the back of the pants thing
its especially annoying me just now cos i'm trying to get on an instructors course but i was told it probs wouldnt be picked up, and its a horrible thing to say but there are much worse riders than me going for the course too so i'm hoping it should be ok!

i mean i know instructor courses are different over there, but like the AASI level one is pretty much a give me. So you really should have no problem...

yeh a mate of mine at work takes anyone who works with us who plans to do the course onto the slope to fix any major posture or riding problems but i've never heard of anyone failing the BASI but you'll know yourself, when you put on an instructor jacket, people WILL be watching you! lol

no that is very true but without seeing you what you are describing in your riding... i dont think it would be noticed by anyone else besides another instructor.

That's for certain. People don't notice the twisting of the upper body as much. Nearly 90% of the people snowboarding at the place I goto turn their upper bodies. I doubt they or their friends notice, it's just something you learn about over the years. It's a good thing to fix though, all that twisting will just make you more tired ;) and more tired=less fun snowboarding.

yeh the thing is that i tried boarding down with a ski pole across my body so i could see when i was twisting and the pole barely moves, like without blowing my own trumpet, i have pretty good body position its just my knee, hip and back hand but my hand's not round in front of me its just slightly over the toe edge

any ideas of any more exercises to fix it?

sex where you are pinned up against somthing.. i prefer bent over a pool table.. but up against a wall would work also.

lol

jump rope.... like an hour a day. extended sit ups(where your back is elevated and you can get negative angle) i do weighted and i love it. and if you wanna have alot more endurance ****ign get a full length mirrior stay on the balls of your feet and two step and swing till you puke. itll help alot.. trust me.

its nothing to do with my fitness, i usually do quite a lot of phys (and tomorrow is actually an hour skipping or jump rope or whatever else you want to call it, an hour in the pool and a run) cos i'm a part timer in the old armed forces so i have pretty good stamina anyways, my legs are pretty damn big and its all power! haha cheers for the idea tho

i was thinking of switching to a diff board for tomorrow and riding a diff stance to see how i get on with that, not that i'm hoping for much of a difference...
