View Full Version : Private instruction
Hey guys, so I have an opportunity to be a private instructor for a 9 year old kid. As in not working directly for the parents. I've never done this before, so for those of you who have, what's a fair rate to ask for?

the kid is paying you?
if so, 2 pitchers of kool-aid and he has to wash your jetta every weekend with option of waxing and detailing after you've taught him his first rail
Kool-aid? What more could I possibly ask for?! :)

are you a certified instructor? not saying you cant do it just having cred lets you charge more ;) how long would you be teaching the kid a day/how many days?
I have my level 1, possibly going for my level 2 this season. I would assume I'd have the kid all day, or at least as long as he can last. The mountain I would take him to is open from 8am-10pm. I believe they'll want me to take him on the weekends for at least most of the season.

Who is this kid to you? Like... how did his parents get a hold of you?
The parents got a hold of me because my gf works with the father.

hourly rates really depend on how long you've been doing something like this and your reputation. When I was where you were... and just starting my adventure in private teaching, i charged about $10 an hour. Depending on if the person was a friend of a friend or if they would be taking lessons EVERY weekend or week i'd lower it a bit seeing they were going to be a return student.
My rates arent anywhere NEAR that now but thats a good place to start.

why wouldn't you just charge a discount to what the mountain charges for privates? our loc mtn has an all-day program for kids (which is, of course, cheaper than paying for an all day private, but it's a group lesson) so maybe somewhere between that and what it would cost to have the kid in an all-day private lesson?
i'm in almost the same boat, except i haven't even been hired as an instructor (no cert or anything). our friends want me to teach their kid (who is a pita). i don't think it's fair to charge what the mountain would, but then again, a private at our mountain would be their only other option.

i will say that some mountains hate people doing that. i know iv had to rip a few people new ********, they were my instructors taking our buisness. would be fine though if they didnt work here.

ya, thought of that. i'd be pissed if i trained someone and they set up shop on my mountain. i was thinking of doing it somewhere else.
