this is from my bro steven
-Frontside/backside?- I'll start off by explaining what a frontside spin is and what a backside spin is, because there's alot of confussion about this. The put it the simplest way i can: For regularfooted: a frontside spin will be counterclockwise and a backside spin will be clockwise. For goofyfooted it's the other way around. Most people think backsidespins look cooler (i dont see any difference) and that they are easier. Backsides are only easier TO LAND because u can spot your landing earlier than in a frontsidespin. To actually spin 90% of the people think it's easier to spin frontside. Jump on flat both way to find out what you're most comfertable with.
-How to start the rotation- To spin u'll have to initiate the rotation or else u wont spin at all. For 180s this is just easy, u go off the jump like u were gonna straightair it and u just swing the 180 around. I'm afraid this wont work for bigger spins (unless u try 360 but u'll need lots of airtime and it wont look good). OK, what to do for bigger spins? U need to initiate (start) the rotation at the moment u jump off. U do this by throwing your arms into the direction u want to spin and jump off. There is a certain technic needed for this!!
-How to initiate a rotation while taking off- First, u need to prewind. Prewinding is when u turn your upperbody/arms in the opposite direction of the way u want to spin. Let's say u want to make a frontside spin. U prewind in the direction of your tail, and unwind (throw your arms in the direction of the spin) in the direction of the nose. Prewinding will give u enough room to throw your arms in the spin with enough force to spin extremely fast. The harder u throw your arms the faster u spin! Now, how to jump off? U need to jump off WHILE unwinding. The perfect take off would be when u jump off at the moment when your body is centered over your board again (halfway the unwind). This will help u spin more stable than an early or late take off. Dont worry, u'll get the hang of this soon enough if u practice alot!
-Riding up the launch- Now, u'll notice that when u prewind your board will follow your movement very easily and u'll fall right infront of the jump!! To prevent this u need to put weight on your: Heeledge when u are prewinding for a frontside spin, Toe-edge if you are prewinding for a backside. U often see people "carving" up the launch. This is because they put more weight on their edge than needed, u only need as much weight as u need to compensate the will of the board to follow your prewindingmovement. Remember, putting more weight than needed on the edge will result in easier spinning (cause u've already turned like 50 degrees of the spin while riding up the launch) but u wont get as much airtime as when u would balance it out perfectly. As u unwind u wont need to hold this edge, your body returns into normal position and your board doesnt want to follow your movement any more. Theoraticly spoken u need te release the edge at the middle of the unwind (then you're centered again). But practicly speeking: the unwinding goes so fast your board wont have the time to turn so u just release the weight on the edge at the moment u unwind. Now u are free to pop off your toes, u dont have to figure out what this is, if u take a good look at when u jump u'll realize the last thing u jump off with is your toes. Popping off your toes will result in more jumppower (more airtime) and it'll also even help u spin your spin flat. So u've popped of your toes and your spinning now!!
-Keeping the spin- To actually stay spinning balanced and fast u'll HAVE to KEEP looking over your shoulder in the way you're spinning, u go from the unwinding immediately to the looking. No matter how much force u used to initiate the rotation, u'll HAVE to keep looking. Keeping your arms tucked in will also help u keep the spin cause of some centrifugal law thingie
-The Landing- To land u'll have to stop your rotation first for most of it. When u got real good and used to landing spins u wont really have to slow your spin down much but if you're a beginner, landing while u still got the rotation just is impossible to do. So u need to slow your rotation down! U do this by stop looking over your shoulder and look at the place u want to land. If u feel this isnt enough u could spread out your arms aswell to slow it down. U'll always keep a bit of rotation!! Keep this in mind when u land!! So u've stopped the biggest part of the spin, u've spot your landing, STOMP IT and absorb the impact. Remember to afterbang (meaning ride away like it was nothing, usually keeping limp arms for a yard or 2)
OK, this was one big story and i can imagine u've lost track of what to do in what order.
1. Ride to the jump, knees bend good and you're centered over your board.
2. as u reach the low part of the launch prewind while putting the needed weight on the right edge.
3. at the lip (this is when the nose of your board is not more than 2 feet away from it) Unwind with as much force as u think is needed for the spin you're going to make and pop of your toes in the middle of the unwind.
4. Start looking over your shoulder in the direction of the way you're spinning, tuck in your arms if u think this is needed.
5. Spot your landing (slow down your spin) and spread out your arms if u think this is needed.
6. STOMP IT like you're Devun Walsh and ride away like it was nothing.
