Much to my surprise, I recently started to like death metal (more specifically Amon Amarth (I also like Finntroll, if you could call that death metal... (them I've liked for a while now, and yes, I know it's more folk metal-ish, but they do have those death growls don't they?))). ........anywho, I was wondering how many other people out there like death metal (or for that matter, alternative types of metal such as folk, doom, or black!) Well, make yourselves heard. Also, if you have any recommendations for good death metal bands, do tell me, as I am new to the "scene".
..........
that is all.. for now.

Think Metallica meets middle earth (heavy metal folk-inspired riffs, often with folk music in the background). It's kind of weird and funny at the same time...
One of those genres that may take some getting used to, for some people.

Give me a break. Slayer is Thrash (search for it if you need validation). Next you're going to try to tell me early Metallica isn't Thrash as well. For Death/Thrash listen to Meshuggah (post Destroy/Erase/Improve).

Death Metal is worth listening to, hence the listening to it as opposed to beating the crap out of each other. If you think about it core mosh pits are a classic sign of self-loathing. Core kids know they listen to crap music, but they don't have the mental capacity to listen to Death and they know it so they punish themselves by going Bruce Lee on everyone they see. I'd prefer if they just stuck to cutting like the Emo kids but whatever.

Uh Porcupine Tree is fronted by Steve Wilson and Dream Theater by James LaBrie. Plus Porcupine Tree is most certainly not metal, they're progressive rock.
There were only a few bands worth seeing at Ozzfest this year. Arch Enemy, Soilwork, The Haunted, Mastodon and In Flames (for their old stuff). I didn't go because I've seen them all several times (except for Arch Enemy who was replaced by Aborted at Graspop) and couldn't be assed to stand in the sun for 20 minute sets. The Euro festival route is so much better than crap here.
@jetcash - Dream Evil is much better than Manowar in the gay cheesy power metal genre. Also were you aware that there's an actual gay Manowar cover band?

You know, that's a good question. I've never seen them as I generally shy away from power metal but most power metal band tale themselves fairly seriously. Dream Evil is the one theatrical power metal band that I know doesn't take themselves seriously because they were manufactured for the purpose of playing cheesy power metal. Although the fact that Manowar have a "death to false metal" chant and the fact that they label every other band as "posers" leads me to believe that not only do they take themselves too seriously, but they're also jerks.

well grill, i took the first definition of the word sing. I am not aware that a death metal band's vocalist sings musical notes, if so, not that often. now, coming to think of it, i guess it might be musical notes, but the sound is much too coarse for me to enjoy. that, and i can't hear the lyrics to many death metal songs.

You really are showing your age. Understanding and tolerance comes with maturity, so for now I'll forgive your niavety. Technical or brutal death metal is what you're most likely referring to, which is difficult for a metal virgin to digest. I suggest you start expanding your musical knowledge with melodic death. Opeth or Dark Suns would be a good starting point and then you could move on to more aggressive melodic death bands such as Soilwork, In Flames, Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy.
I'm fairly sure I've listened to whatever kind of music you and enjoy and given it a fair shake, now it's time for you to do the same for me so next time we can at least have an intelligent discussion on the subject.

i haven't listened to much. why would i listen to a lot of something that i dont' really like. however, my friend likes death metal and i decided to listen to a little. i've heard like 1/2 of the newest meshugah (sp?) cd, which i thought wasn't horrible, but definitely not one of the greatest things i've heard. he also got me tolisten to a few other cd's from miscellaneous bands.

Meshuggah owns all, but is tough to stomach. The drums are played 4/4 with the guitars played at 5/5/6 (still 16 beats per measure). Their newest album Catch 33 is actually only one song and can't truely be appreciated unless listened to in such a manner. Nevertheless, Meshuggah is a tough band to digest and certainly not for the death metal virgin (unless said virgin happend to be a huge Rush fan and is into composition and musicianship). I've always found that all good music needs to be digested. When I get a new album I'll listen to it 5-10 times before I try to form an opinion on it. Then again I understand that this won't work for everyone.
Give 'Blackwater Park' by Opeth a listen. If you can't find it then get at me on aim or msn and I'll be more than happy to give you a copy.

sure. i still kinda don't know how the drums and guitars could be using two different time signatures... but then again musicians these days do a ****load of stuff outside the norm. i guess i'll give them a second listen... i need something to thrash to when i'm really pissed off.

Rush did it quite a bit.
The way Meshuggah does it is that a 5/5/6 is simply a syncopated 4/4, so technically it's still in time, it just has the side effect of unsettling the stomach.

hmm i've don't know much about a 5/5/6 time signature, i've only seen/played to a time signature with 2 numbers. what's the third one mean?

yea i know a band that's pbbly gonna be on MTV in less than a year. The City Drive, they're pop/rock.
i like how sometimes good bands get a lot of popularity, but i hate it how lots of people like bands strictly cuz everyone else likes them.

well while the drummer plays 4/4, for 4 bars, aka 16 beats
the guitar will play 5 beats, then 5 then 6
and they will both end at the same time
its not actually written 5/5/6 its just the divison of the beats, if that makes sence
