Ok so I want to listen to music on the slopes. Last time I was on the mountain I actually put a cd player in the front pocket of my hoodie but I've got cash to spend so I'm looking to invest in an mp3 player. I don't want an iPod. Call me a nonconformist but I just freaking hate the monopoly and I refuse to accept that there's nothing else as good or better out there. Especially for $200.

So what are my options? (Keep in mind I dont want anything with a hard drive because a good hard fall would probably kill it. Also, I'm not spending more than $175.)

iRiver makes good players. to be honest creative is gonna be your second best bet.. Ive owned creative and ipod. They are both the same. The zen micro and the zen sleek are def good choices with decent amount of space and for a good price.. I work at circuitcity so i kinda know my way around those players.. but Id check about ordering them off newegg.com. btw an extended warranty, if you can get accidental damage i would def try that.

if it's not an ipod, it's iriver or creative.

I own a Creative Zen Nano Plus 1 Gig and love it, holds more than enough songs, you've got a radio if you need it, it's as small as a cigarette lighter and definitely light as all hell, comes with a protective silicone case and armband if you choose to place it on your arm for some other sport or workout. Cost was $110...............can't beat it if you ask me!

The Plus comes with the case, armband and radio...............if it's not a plus then you loose those 3 features...........but now you can purchase the armband and case for $20.............good luck!

ok dude I'm a salesman for electronic sh*t and from what I've seen, this one that phillips is the best, or the toshiba one, but if you can get your hands on it, its called iBulldog, and its like 50 bucks, holds a good couple hours of music, and its fairly durable, I took a pretty good spill on it and it still works, and it even came out of my pocket and chilled in the snow for like a minute or so, so yea, find that one and you're good.

I wanted music for the mountain, but didn't want to spend that much on an ipod. i bought the new slvr phone from motorolla, which comes with itunes on it. what a good investment, not only is it a sick ass phone, you can store 512 Mb of music, or 100 songs, whichever is first. it also takes really great pics, and video with sound. the only complaint i have is the earphones it comes with don't stay in your ear while snowboarding, but it comes with an adapter to plug in regular phones also. i paid 200 bucks for it, but i'm sure in a few months the price will be dropping due to new products. this phone is sick, and i would recommend it to anyone.

I actually did get the ipod... i was looking at either that or the iriver... but the possibility of having 40 gigs of music was just too tasty.

I think what you should really be thinking about is headphones also. Because although the player can/will break the wallet, its the headphones that'll be making it sound great and be comfy on your noggin':

Call me cautious, but i wear a helmet on the slopes, sony earbuds were crappy under the helmet's ear covers, they always seemed to shift and when they did one side would be louder than the other. I then tried the philips (16 bucks) white headphones that are outside the ear, they wrap down below the hairline on the back of the head, which was awesome because it totally cleared the helmet.

But on my last run of the season i tried something new. I was kinda tired of not actually being able to hear everything around me (music at the sacrifice of awareness of your surroundings) so i took my Sony MDR-V700's. Now, taking 140 dollar DJ headphones might seem a bit outthere, but i didn't actually put them on my ears, the things are so loud that you can actually just leave them around your neck and it gives you a nice little backround music effect. As a added bonus, the big beefy design kinda acts like a neck brace when you wear it with a helmet and take a nasty spill. ... yes i'm being serious.... check the avatar <~~~~~

I've got an iPod and love it...100 songs just cannot cut it for me...I like to have thousands of songs with me...never thought of bringing my big ass nice headphones on the mountain but I might give it a shot. I usually just bring some small cheap ones.

I myself love my ipod already, i havent ridden with it, cuz im in Iraq, haha and i alreayd have over a 1000 songs on it, but when i get back ill be able to put ALL my cds on the 30Gig, so i can listen to ANYTHING I WANT when i ride, and as for that, i wont have to carry all my cd's in my car either thanks to the ipod connector, its gonna be SICK, just throw that bad boy in my glovebox, and im good to go, no more picking through one of the 4 cd cases i have searching for a cd, just turn that little knob and im good to go, its gonna be awesome, and safer for sure...

Just some advice from somebody who's paid the money, voided the warranty due to riding, and had to pay again.

DO NOT BUY PLAYERS WITH HARD DRIVE BASED PLAYERS!!!!!

Any vibrations or skips to the hard drive will eventually cause it to mess up. Once that happens, its all over.

My 20gig Ipod has been sent out to service 5x and they've replaced the parts inside over and over.

Get yourself a "Flash memory" player. for example, the ipod mini. Currently, they hold anywhere from 5-10 gigs and aren't affected by shocks or vibrations and don't skip because there's no moving parts

I'm not going to read this whole thread...

Ipods suck. first and formost.
Next thing you have to remember is the 20gig, 40gig and 60gig MP3 players are HARD DRIVES... which mean they have spinning disks with lazer eyes reading the info. Jostling around will ruin the HD.

You want an MP3 player that uses Flash memory. and my suggestion is the one that I have. the Sandisk Sensa 250e. Bigger screen then a nano, REPLACEALBE Li Ion Battery, AM/FM tuner / Voice recording... and best of all... EXPANDABLE MEMORY.

PS the 2gig sensa is about $50 less then the 2gig nano... why? because Apple blows.

man i keep forgetting...

Ipods? you must like itunes!!! isnt it a WONDERFUL program? I think retarded monkeys worte it...

Sandisk (yeah they make all the memory that you put in your computer along with flash disks and other storage devices)

They thought that itunes was pretty stuipd too... you know how i put my music on my Sensa? yeah Click and drag to the folder. No converting, no sync-ing, no sending reports back to itunes and the RIAA about what music i have... click, drag, done... WIN.
