I was waiting at the top for my sister and amused myself by taking shots of people I don't know getting off the lift.
I'm becoming a mean person in my old age.

No jk, but those pics were hilarious. I fall only when my friends and I are hit by the random guy on our lift and causes a chain reaction or somone is standing in the middle of the ramp.

Those are always fun to watch... My skiier buddy happen to stick his pole right in front of my board last night, so when I tried to go forward, just kinda toppled over and had to duck under the chair goin over my head and roll out from under it. Sucked

Haha those were funny. It seems to me that no matter how good you are at snowboarding, getting off the chair lift is always going to be a hassle. My bf who has been riding for 20 yrs, still falls off the chair lift from time to time.

I had a friend who was riding for 5 years, and very frequently, and she would hop on her unstrapped boot off the lift every time! Lifting the board behind her and hopping out of the way.. that seems more painful than learning to slide off! (post note, she went back to skiing after her 5th season..)

This happend to me a few weeks ago. Random skier sticks his pole right in line with the nose of my board. there is a little drop so his pole was at an angle and without his straps around his wrist I ran right over it and pulled it out of his hand. Did not feel to bad since it was a rental, and he should watch where he sticks his poles. lol

I fall off of the lift a lot. I am a good rider too, but for some reason i struggle with getting off of the lift. It also doesn't help that there is always a bunch of idiots standing in front of where the lift where you get off.

hehe, crazy old noobs...
I had a couple of really good head-over-heels falls getting off the lift at the beginning of the season. I wish someone could've gotten them on film... no more funny falls for me lately, though. I guess that's a good thing.

In a way i sympathize with people that fall off the lift bc even though we have been boarding for a few years now, every time i ride the lift with my bf he somehow manages to run into me or otherwise knock me over getting off... one time he owned me so bad i dislocated my shoulder!! its the people who just lay there who should be run over by the next person

03-28-2006, 11:41 PM
haha yeah when i first started i did that ... i haven't fallen off of a chairlift once this whole season. but i still do it at times... i still have yet to fall this season, before it gets over haha but i got so close a couple times.
this person crashed in front of me, and i was like screaming move...but they just sat there! i was like omg! but luckily i went around them, it was a close call...haha and then i almost ate it cuz my friend that was in the middle hit my board with her board...that was another close call haha

i blame the ignorant ppl who stand in the way of ppl getting off the lift. how do u ppl get off the lift? i never push myself off on my own, i always stand up at the last possible second and let the chair push me as it swings around to give me the momemtum to go down the slope. it works like really well.
snobug
03-29-2006, 12:01 AM
yeah I use the chair to push off also and always try to hang back from the rest of the people getting off. And, I definitely have my favorite side and hate getting stuck in the middle if its a triple or quad.
There is a lift at Bolton where the chairs are sloped slightly forward so you have to hold on tight as soon as you get on. I saw a bunch of people fall off that lift all in one day, it was too funny, but at least there was plenty of snow, they had a soft landing.

the only times i fall out of the chair is if the chair gets crowded and the one lone japanese guy pushes everyoen over. i love japanese poeple, hell i studied the language for 4 years (don't remember any of it, but still), but the onyl thing i can't stand are the japanses skiers when they come to the resorts, they act liek ********, until you step on their ski poles and they topple over when they get off the lift next tiem arodun, then they leave you alone

03-29-2006, 02:48 AM
i fell not too long ago but i was unfortunate to have a chinese lady for her first time on a snowboard and i guess the first thing that went through her head when she was falling was to grab onto me. Pretty much sucked but hey what can u do...i guess just dont let randoms hop on with you..
ps. last pic looks like the guys gonna take out the little booger on skis

Sometimes the ramp gets so screwed up and the liftie sleeping in the shack never comes out and does anything with it. One night at the top of Hood Express, the center got trenched out so it funneled everyone on the quad into the center....it was comical and the liftie never did anything with it....bet he spent the evening laughing his ass off!. They need to slope those things like a two lane road with a crown in the center so people slide away from each other instead of together. The only way to get off the thing was to hop on your free foot away from the ramp.

One of these days when the Blue lift is running at Meadows I'm going to stand there and videotape people getting off it. That has to be the single WORST lift ramp I've ever seen (for boarders that is, I don't see skiiers having much of an issue on it).

One time, getting on an old-style lift, I noticed just at the last second that someone had left the safety bar down (very funny, grrrr). I couldn't get it up in time, and ended up diving into the snow so it wouldn't hit me in the head. Must have looked pretty funny.

lol but yea... lots of people always fall off the lifts. the biggest problem most people have is that they dont' sit on the edge of the lift, which is the only position where you can really get your board pointing straight, and where you can stand up directly over your board, and not leaning backwards. Then from there it's just a matter of putting your unstrapped food on your board and riding it out.

Another thing I love about riding my click-in bindings. I'm usually clicked back in shortly after getting on the lift.
My friend Liz used to wreck me constantly getting off the lifts - when she went to stand up, she'd usually put her hand on my leg to push herself off, which in turn sent me tumbling and hilarity ensued.

got my the tops of my boots stuck under the seat thus throwing me on the floor so i had to duck the next chair and makin me look like a total tool!
then a couple of days later i decided to try and get the better of the lift by jumping off early, this didnt work either as the snow wasnt compacted so i sunk, leaving my head at just the right height to get whalloped round the back of the head by the next chair lift, thus leaving me concussed and bleeding. but most distressing of all i lost my cool! :P
haha we all do it from time to time no matter how good...or bad.
However their will always be one mean **** hanging around with a camera to catch those perfect moments
well done whoever took those photos, nice one!

I worked at a ski resort as a liftie and spent most of the day picking people up as they fell off my lift... you should've seen some of the crazy things that went down this season!!! I havent fallen off a chair lift in years, but I did have a bit of an accident of the rope tow... bars at the top of the mountain are the worst idea ever, are really supposed to be able to ride back down drunk and not get hurt!?!?!

i've never used a rope tow... all they have at mountain creek and hunter are lifts, and a gondola at creek.
if you fall off of a gondola i don't think you ahve the coordination to be snowboarding at all =P

I'll do it again this season if you guys want!

That's actually pretty common..
Last season was my first year and I would ALLWAYS fall off the lift. I hated the damn lift. I would get the wind knocked out of me almost every time. Now this season has been better. heh

^you mean its common that people get off the chairlift the opposite of what they are? well i geuss i didn't know it was common...my friends that snowboard just tell that its weird that i do that...but i'm glad i'm not the only one that does that, or did haha. good job on improvement on the chairlift! it takes awhile for some to get the hang of the chairlift!

Your sayin people who fall off the lift shouldn't be boarding? Dude why would you even say that riding is fun and why the hell would it matter if someone has trouble getting off the lift.. so what? Some people just aren't told how to get off properly and that's usually the problem. Let em ride.

every one has to start somewhere.. your basically saying that if you fall off the lift, then turn in your board and stop trying..
falling off the lift happens, but should stop when you get good.. if someone is still falling off the lift after 3 years or more, then they need to start going more, and stop putting there feet on the ground as soon as the hit the snow..

The only times its a problem with me is when at the end of the lift they have a steep hill, so if you cant skate that well you are going on your ass.
On flat ground its no big deal, but when you get a ton of sped getting off and cant control yourself skating very well, its hello snow, meet my ass........

i agree with you about how everyone has to start somewhere!don't quit if you keep falling, just keep on practicing! don't give up on a fun sport!
and i also agree that after 3 years one should probably have a good grasp on getting off the lift! i only fell a couple times off the chairlift during my first year of snowboarding....but then there were those other times where i have fallen because of other people. like this one time a kid ate it and wouldn't move and there was no going around because i was in the middle...so i just dropped....i would never want to hit a kid! everyone was screaming get up, but that didn't really work....and then one time when i was trying to get on the chairlift the ground was so icy that i slipped, and the guy stopped the lift just in time for the chair to catch me.....and my friend grabbed me and pulled me up on the seat. talk about being quick on their feet. i barely made it!it was scary... has that ever happened to anyone?

I think I wrote this before, but I've been riding for close to 15 years and I STILL fall off the damn lift. It happens, especially with snowboards. I miss the days of control straps on the inside of the board. My old Sims had one, and it helped alot.

I've had one or two close calls getting on the lift, haha.. :P
But doesn't everyone fall getting off the lift once in a while, regardless of their level? I fall maybe once or twice per day I go up on my stomp padless board. Not huge fumbles like way back when, so it's not a big deal I guess.

yeh so workin at a resort now and i dont see people fall gettin off as much as people fall getting on. some of the people that are those skiers and boarders who come once a year are just retarded. there is a wait here sign for a reason! people try to rush it and get nailed with the lift! and then i have to stop the damn thing and reset the box. we had one kid fall off and one of our guys made a divin catch for him. it was one of the best football plays ever.

I always seem to fall not as much as b4. I have been going for awhile now but not always concitent. When i put my foot on the board it slips off and i get nervous and put my foot on the snow and wam fall down. I sucks. I am sure ppl take pics of me cause i would lol.

Are you kidding? Steep...flat, there is no difference. Plant your foot on the deck against the binding and lean forward. You will be amazed at how easy it is to not fall. Just act like you have your foot strapped in. It's the same thing basically. You can still carve and control your board without your foot in the binding.

Well when your boot is sliding off, and not to mention the boot is much larger than the waist of your board, so your heel and toe are digging into snow it becomes a problem, but you are right thats its not as hard as it seems.

i freak out when im on a quad chair packed...since i dont know how the others are going to handle it...and im usually stuck in the middle giving the gf the outside seat...so i panic and sometimes fall...but i try to get up and push off the lift to get ahead of the others on the chair.

You aren't one of these cats that refuses to use a stomp are ya? Get a good stomp that has plastic spikes...doesn't have to be huge. Dakine makes good ones like that. Also, push off from the chair. Don't let the chair push you.
You probably already know this....but...line your hips up as you're nearing the off-load. (You should be able to swivle your hip around...pretty much like when you are skating on flat. You aren't hop chopping are you?) Get your foot over the deck ...stomp pad or none...before your board even touches the snow. This way when it does, you just stand up and push away with mostly your hand, but also a little with the side of your knee as you are standing. Mostly your hand though. Go speed racer. That simple. Carve around the ding-a-lings.
No one should be crashing getting off the lift if they have been riding for more than 20 days. If that.

the stomp pad makes a huge diff? I dont have one of thouse maybe then my foot wont slide. My boots are too small also and i think they are jsut as wide as my board.

Nah, I only fall when its super steep cause I am bad at trying to come to a stop with only one foot on.
Yeah I pretty much refuse to get a stomp pad, even if it may help. Its just when I lean back to stop my foot usually comes off and yea know... **** happens. Up to that point I am good and I already do what you say.
jon1976
01-08-2007, 09:35 PM
favor your front foot a little more, while keeping your weight almost centered. You can still rock with out a stomp, but you have to "feel" things more. ie feel if you are about to back foot banana peel.
I'd say get a stomp if I was yous.

Yes it will help you tremendously. IMO, no beginners shouldn't have one. When you say that your boots are too small, do you mean for your feet? That's not good.

Ya for my feet. I have smaller feet and they felt fine when I bought them but now they hurt my feet after awhile. I am gonna try the stomp pad and I hope that will work, as well as getting new boots.

Good deal, and I think that Dragon was helping you out in another thread....that paired with the stomp pad and boots that are working with your feet rather than ailing them, will definitely make things much better.
Plus with boots that fit well, your feet will stay warmer. Better circulation.
