I am about to purchase a snowboard and the only thing stopping me is binding size. I discovered that they only come in sizes of S M L and XL.

I wear an 11.5 boot.

What size bindings do I need? Are boots and bindings dependent on each other for size?

It depends on the binding. But if you are 11.5 I would say it would be a large. The ride size chart say medium is 5-9 and large is 9-14

Each company has a sizing chart that will tell you what size bindings to get for whatever size boots. So find the bindings you like and then check the sizes. If you can, check it out in the store with your boots. For instance, Drake bindings say that Mediums go up to boot size 8.5 or 9 (I forget) But Burton boots run a little bigger than Northwaves so if you get size 8.5 Burtons they might not fit the M Drakes. If that makes sense.

11.5 is pretty much a large in every company.

on a more general note... I am a 9.5 and I like to go with a large. I could go with a medium, but its the difference of having the straps max'd on the meduim or having some room to play on the large.

From one big foot to another (size 12 boot) the large should be fine. But like everyone one suggested check the company's sizing chart, unless you have monster feet and a wide board you'll be set with the larges.
