Are gloves w/ built in wrist guards good? I read about them on another topic, and after takin a nasty fall on the box today, i think i should get some. Any suggestions about them? Brands? Prices? Reviews? Thx in adv.

I have a pair of Level Fly

http://www.levelgloves.com/level.html

They work pretty well, but it's not a traditional wrist guard in the sense that there's no plate that goes on the top side of the glove to prevent your wrist from bending backwards. The plus is that you actually get mobility with your hands. The downside is that you can still get some wrist pain if you fall on your palms. The plate over the palm will prevent any breakage though.

Yeah I think any protection is good. I know a couple ppl that broke their wrists.

I think wrist guards are good when you're just starting out or learning a new trick. But don't rely on them too much. I've known quite a few people who broke their arms as a result of using the wrist guard because when they fall, there wasn't enough give in the wrist guards to allow the hands to roll and caused a break where the guards ended on the arm.

Well, a doctor at the hospital told me the same thing. He was seeing more people coming in with the arm broken, instead of wrists, which takes longer to heal. So yeah, good for begginers.

I've been riding for years and won't give up 2 important things... helmet and wrist guards. My head and hands are what make the money that pays for me to ride. Protect your investment and you end up with more years on the slopes.

Anecdotal evidence, one of my best mates just broke his wrist (been riding 10 years) its in the shape of a Z.

I use a low profile double (top and bottom plates) snowboarding specific wrist guard from pro-tec. Another friend of mine bought the gloves with built in support, kind of like ribbing, and hated them for inability to move and no comfort. I don't have any trouble in mine.

Back to the economy of it: $30 for guards, or $??,??? over the course of your lifetime for physical therapy and eventual joint replacements/earlier arthritis pain.

i've worn wrist guards for all the time ive been snowboarding which is since i was 11 (7 full seasons), and two years ago i broke my wrist after falling hard on an air to fakie and knocked myself out cold. had i not been wearing wrist guards i probably would have shattered my wrist but instead it was a clean break whcih could easily be reset (well not easily, but i had it done at the mountain and just wore a cast on it for a month).

this year i was urban riding and my friend and i set up on a rail, i guinea pigged it and sprained my wrist after coming off early on the rail...this was my first time falling without wrist guards, and had to sit out two weeks of the season because my wrist hurt too much to ride with)

as for the wrist guards themselves i have the ones by burton r.e.d. they were like $45 or something like that and i love em. don't get the gloves with the built-in guards b/c then not only do you not have options glove-wise but they're also not comfortable. the only downside to wrist guards is that you have to buy bigger gloves than normal and sometimes pipe gloves are a stretch. well that's what i think...

I have a pair with wrist guards in them, I think the guard is flimsy and I really do not like it. they are Zero Gloves. the gloves are good, I just do not like the wristguard part.
I rather use my "red" wristguards.

gloves with built in wrist guards are better then nothing, but not as good as gloves and then seperate wrist guards. i wear the burton red wrist protectors. the are the most comfortable ones i have ever seen
