View Full Version : Obsessions

i've noticed recently that people make so many assumptions and stuff based on their musical taste. and frankly, it annoys me. Can someone like a band like good charlotte and be a good person? yes. can someone like both bad brains and blink 182? yea.
people are getting too obsessed with "oh, you like a popular band like green day, you're a shallow person" or the opposite "you like unpopular bands (that are default bad, because they're not popular) like cheap sex or whatever 'devil worshipping' punk/metal music" or whatnot.
i think people need to take a step back, and start hating people for who they are, and not what they listen to.

I totally agree with you!! I hate it that people say that they hate Green Day now because they "sold out"... that kind of stuff is bull****!! Grrrrr.... you are definately right with this whole post.

I don't dislike people for their taste or lack of taste in music. It does however make me sad when people like bad music. I don't hate Green Day, I don't like it when people are just now getting into Green Day when they are putting out music that isn't at near the level as their music used to be. When I was younger, in high school and freshman year in college, I liked some pretty questionable music and thought I had good taste, but that will not stop me from clowning on someone with bad taste who feels they know what good music is. I'm a snob when it comes to music and i really do not care.

the question is why do you care what people think about your taste in music.

See... I think the whole post is meant in a sarcastic way, yet not....
Don't hate people for their music, hate them because you hate who they are!

exactly. music is starting to become way too big in life.
it's entertainment, if it floats your boat, then that's good.

i dont know i just think that musical preference is a stupid reason to not like someone.

I think your point is lost on some people. Because it is, IN FACT, an opinion that not many high school age people would have. To be mature enough to realize that hating people for their musical likes and dislikes is stupid... well... that's pretty damn good in my book.
So again, I think that some people just don't understand what you're trying to say here.

i'm the same way. if i like how music sounds, i listen to it. and i used to listen to new kids when i was younger (between the ages of 5 and 7). sad thing is, if they had a reunion concert, i would be there

I'll embarrass myself... I saw the New Kids in concert. I was 14 maybe 15. They weren't huge yet, just getting there. They opened for Tiffany. Funny thing was, the tour managers started to realize that people would come see the New Kids and leave before Tiffany came on. So for out show, Tiffany came on first, then the New Kids.
Oh, and Joey sooooo looked at me.

i also saw new kids in concert. but it was during the height of their success. but i was also 7, so it's okay.

I only kinda listened to the new kids (I was into cheesey hip hop at the time), but I had a friend who was obsessed with them and had their posters all over her room. It kinda creeped me out, they were always staring at me.
PS. I don't think anyone actually HATES anyone for their musical taste, they're just mocking them. I'm ok with that. I mostly mock people who listen to music that makes it obvious that they don't think for themselves (top 40's radio stuff).

jeez, you saw New Kids when you were 7? I don't think I saw any bands until I was around 17 and I think it was either the B-52's or Stray Cats...can't remember. Then there was my first big outdoor concert - the Police, Go-Go's, the Specials, and someone else I don't remember! And for the record, I love GreenDay, just saw them back in September. Yeah, they were a little over the top, maybe you could say they've 'sold out'. But most good bands get to that point someday, it's a natural progression, don't you think? I saw U2 years ago, love their old stuff, but still love them to this day. You definitely can't hate or judge a person too much by their taste in music.

i wasn't born in time to see the new kids. however, when i was like 5, i was into backstreet boys. but that's because i have 2 sisters who were totally obsessed, and back then i thought my older sister was the coolest ever.

i'll also point out that i didn't go to my next concert until i was 16. and that was cypress hill's/limp biscuit's (sp?) free show that they did in response to the whole napster/metallica issue. and no, i didn't wait in line for days for the show. i showed up to work the day of the concert (i worked at fye at the time) and a sony rep happen to come in and change some posters. anyone who was working that day got put on the guest list.

I used to be into the Spice Girls. I didn't have any albums but I listened to their songs on the radio and collected their stickers!!
As for current music, I listen to lots of good music and lots of bad music (including 90s pop and electronica, often when riding). Quite frankly, I'm happy with what I listen to and don't care what people think about it. :)

Actually... Jackson 5 was the original Boy Band...
And New Edition came before New Kids....
And Menudo before them...
But.... In the way you're thinking... New Kids are teh predecessors of Backstreet and N'Sync.

i used to listen to dave mathews band and thought they were amazing until they completely changed. i've seen dmb in concert 9 times. the first show i saw was the longest and each show after that was shorter until it was nearly cut in half yet cost nearly twice as much. the music also changed so much and is now some sort of mainstream adult alternative crap. they were really my bad music that i was referring to in my post. i never liked spice girls, backstreet boys, nsync, or any of those nor any of those horrible mainstream rock bands of the late 90s through the present time.

I was a die-hard DMB fan for years. Saw them 5 times in one year... can't even count my total number of shows at this point. Trekked to Central Park alone for the free show in 2003. I have every CD they made up until Busted Stuff when they about died in my eyes. I don't think I even listened to that CD once. But, I'm not gonna hate on them for the time that I did like them. They had a place in my life and they filled a need.
I wasn't as knowledgable about music then as I am now. But when I went to DMB shows, I was happy. Part of growing up is changing. I'm also not trashing anyone who still listens to DMB. It's just not my thing anymore.

I still listen to the Spice Girls all the time. I have a huge variety of musical tastes. It's kinda weird and random, but I like things that way I guess.
