If thinking of a G4 ibook...they have just released the Macbook with the Intel processor, I imagine the ibook will be updated with the Intel processor as well soon.

Don't buy a Mac. Not unless you feel like being stuck with the craptastic Mac OS X. Even with intel processors, they will not "boot" to windows for firmware reasons. I don't know if you can run WinXP as a virtual operating system in Macs, but it sucks running it that way anyways. Windows Vista is suppose to offer support for the new intel based mac's firmware later on, but who knows how long that will take. Vista is already delayed as it is. Also, From what I've read, Apple doesn't expect to fully integrate intel into all of their computers until sometime next year. I would wait atleast year or so while they transition over to their new platform and get the bugs worked out.

I use both operating systems, they both do the same thing, why do you hate MacOSX so much?

Well your father won't have to to fix anything with your Mac if you get one.
Alienware, voodoopc and falcon nw are all a waste of money.

I'm not a Mac user, but I find it hard to believe that OS X, which is based on Unix, would be worse than Windows. My only gripe with Mac's is that they cost too much for the hardware you get.

Id much rather have an IBM Thinkpad but if its between those choices, id go with the Dell.

just so you know, all of those "high end" gaming machines are made by the same company. If you buy it from dell, alienware, voodoopc or falcon they all buy from the same place but they repackage it and relabel it.

If I didn't get all of my Windows-based software for free... or didn't have to buy all new stuff like Photoshop and such that I already have, I'd get a Mac in a heartbeat. So easy to use. Relatively virus free. There is no registry to get bogged down with extraneous fles and old program information. They're slicker, hotter looking, and just plain fun.

with osx you can pretty much recompile any program used on the BSD platform, and a majority of it is free. Gimp is an example but they have a mac install. It is a great replacement for photoshop if you don't want to purchase it. And you could exploit your friendship with Fae and have her buy the educational versions of all the programs you need and save like 70% :D

Photoshop is still better than GIMP in many ways. There's no way I could ditch it and go to GIMP.
Also, if you're a gamer, get a PC. If you're not a gamer and don't use a lot of Windows based software (Matlab, 3dsmax, Maya, Lightwave, etc etc) then I suppose macs are easier. In most cases though, getting a PC would be a better choice.
As for Alienware....way way overpriced. I build my own rigs a rig of equivalent or better specs, it'd cost me probably not even half of what they charge.

A great DIY option is one of the mini-itx boxes made by Shuttle. You just have to stick in the CPU, RAM and drives and you have a nice, quiet shoebox-sized machine.

i have been using small form factor for years it's the best way to go if you are an upgrade freak. When i was about to upgrade i got a mac and i don't touch my pc except for gaming and video editing. I don't have final cut pro so i just use vegas and premiere

Oh, by the way, if you're going to exploit your friendship with my educational discount, you should probably act fast. Hopefully.
