I normally go to the gym up to 6 times a week for weight lifting and cardio. I also maintain somewhat of a strict diet which includes protein shakes and other workout supplements.. Out of all the working out i do, cardio helps out the most...

it doesn't sound like you go to the gym for riding it sounds like you go for muscle building and you happen to snowboard.

yeah, I don't think you need protein shakes and workout suppliments to snowboard.. i think those are for people who want nice pecs.
Cardio would obviously help tho. As would weight training involving your leg muscles.

Why not? it's so FUN! I also like sitting on contraptions that allow you to pick up heavy objects and put them down with unusual muscle groups, like your ass.
I like hiking, rock climbing, and martial arts to stay in shape.. tho I always seem to do less than I intend to.

I just try and stay active. The gym is usually my last resort, I'd much rather be outside biking, hiking, kayaking, or playing soccer or golf or something. But when I am doing specific workouts, I try to focus on my legs and back muscles (as has already been said), mostly through light resistance, as well as some cardio time, just to keep the muscles moving. Also, I'll throw in yoga/pilates, just something involving light stretching to keep my muscles from getting too tight.

I lift weights as well as use the elliptical at home. I enjoy lifting weights and it keeps me strong. I have changed my routine to concentrate more on the legs, back and abs. I am also going to use one of those wobble boards I used in rehab in my knee. That should keep my ankles strong and ready for next season.
I started lifting weights to loose some weight, now that I shed some pounds I started riding, now that I ride I want to be in better shape to ride. What a vicious circle. :D

Maybe I'll get a flowboard this summer.
I run, hike, and hopefully will find time to do yoga this summer. If nothing else, I keep in shape by having a dog that requires at least two half hour walks a day. This actually makes a big difference.
Plus I live in a city, so I walk all the time anyway.

I use my treadmill every now and then just for cardio/stamina. Maybe some squats for the knees. But like.. as far as snowboarding muscles go, you get them pretty fast after a week or so of just riding. The great thing about snowboarding as a sport is that you don't really have to do anything in the off-season...

What kind of supplements do you take? Besides Whey you really dont need anything unless you want extra to get bulky use Creatine. Food is more important then supplements but they are nice for the extra gains, just stay away from Anti-Estrogens. I weight train, and stretch.

The first flow board that I ever saw (in Details mag.) had these cool metal hooks to slip your feet in to. I haven't seen one of those in years though. Bindings would be SICK on a flow lab board, more control.... cuz stopping is hard. I broke 2 ribs this summer on my flow lab board cuz I couldn't stop.

Its not easy staying in shape for snowboarding. First i have to go to the gym and get those insane energy drinks, then i just look around like im doing something in my tight ass spandex then i leave. Then i head to the mountain and really get my head focused by smoking insane amounts of mary jane. Then i go bust out 5's and 270 backsides.

I don't really work out or anything. I play alot of different sports, basketball, football, soccer, softball, ultimate, and do some skateboarding. I will go wakeboarding a few times this summer as my best friend's dad just got a sweet new boat.
I was in excellent shape in high school, ran the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in track as well as the long jump, played football, basketball and even competed in some powerlifting meets. I would be embarassed if I tried to run 3,200 meters now, I can't even imagine what my time would be.

just make sure you ice the sh it out of your knees when you are done riding if they bother you...try getting some dixie cups and filling them with water and freezing them, then peel a little paper back and ice with those...rubbing ice directly over a spot for three to five minutes is much more effective than icing with a cold pack or bag for twenty minutes

i go to the gym and lift legs two to three days a week..the day after the gym i ride my bike for fifteen miles to help stay loose..i do balance exercises about four times per week..eating right and stretching are key though...once i get healthy again i will start working upper body again, focusing on core strength for riding...ill also incorporate jumping exercises into my balance routines..they help with explosive power...i play lacrosse and mountain bike too..but i am a cripple so i can only ride on the street and i am stuck with just coaching lax right now....
its such a shame that i have to ride V this V on the street

I'm a nerd and am not really supposed to be involved in sports. However, my parents got me involved in sports when I was young and now I'm used to it... :)
My training for snowboarding during the season is snowboarding and only snowboarding...
Last off-season I only biked (not mountain or bmx biking, just normal biking around the city and so on) and skateboarded. In addition, this off-season I plan to jog, maybe train with weights, and exercise my grey matter--usually I try to learn how to read and/or write several new chinese characters per week.

I can't snowboard nearly as much as I would like since I live in god damn southwestern Ohio so the gym is important to me. I enjoy seeing results with either my cardio, muscle training, whatever. I don't gear it towards riding since, as I said, I don't ride much. Although, if I did, I would incorp. more streching, legs, and cardio.

I altered my regular cardio for boarding. On the elliptical / cross-trainer, I test my leg strength and balance by running as much as I can without any upper-body support. I use weights for the upper. Oh, protein shakes are good after boarding. You are only making the muscles you just worked on the mountain stronger by drinking one.

i didn't used to do anything, but after a bad wipeout, i started going to the gym for rehab after my PT benefit ran out. just kept doing it, cuz i liked the feeling of getting back in halfway decent shape. going on my 3rd yr of being in the gym 5 days a week. i do weights 2 days and swim about a mile of interval training the other 3. boy, has it made a difference in my riding. more stamina, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound...
and i don't feel like such a wet rag after the end of the first day of the season. or any other day, for that matter.

For me, it's more about using snowboarding as a form of exercise to get into shape.
That being said, I think that for the summer months, I'll probably get myself a skateboard and take that up again. Haven't skated since I was about 14 years old, but it should be good for helping me stay active on a board for the summer as well as mountain biking.

first off if you want to stay healthy for snowboarding.... start skateboarding, because that is all legs... second off this discussion shouldnt be happening, snowboarding isnt like other "sports" it is more about having fun. and unless you are going to be a boardercross fruit, then dont worry about working out. Your only supplements should be mcdonalds, doughnuts, red bull, and beer... with the occasional jager bomb

i take karate, not for snowboarding but it helps. My leg muscles are nice and strong from doing kicks and crap in karate. in the snowboarding season i also do 5 sets of 3 pistols a day on each leg (1 legged squats) to help for hard carving and jumps. as far as not getting tired during the day... i have my natural endurance from being a teenager and the lift rides to keep me rested... also the thought that i don't know how often i will be able to go during the season, so i pump as many runs as possible.

I so miss SF! I walked the hills all the time, I lived at the bottom of a huge one. Now it's a combo of stuff: I live near the beach so running, taking the Santa Monica stairs, jumproping, dancing, gym stuff, yoga, pilates and some skating.

true that bro. gymnasts need more pound-for-pound strength than any other sport. people think it's a fairy sport because it's mostly a girl's sport and you need to be able to do splits and do routines to music.

well i go to the gym pretty often, like 5 times a week, and am slowly getting back into shape (since i've only been able to run for like month since my last knee surgery, i'm in horrible shape, not to mention i was never in good shape in the first place)....and i don't really focus my workout on snowboarding, but i work out my legs, arms, abs, all that good stuff...and i run. i used to play soccer, but after my knee injury i stopped. i play tennis, which is also not very good on the knees but whatever. i haven't played pretty much since the high school season though, which ended in like october. oh well.

I did martial arts and was a boxer for most of my life. I was very flexible but lost that completely over the last couple years. I think if I kept my edge i would still be able to get into gymnastics even at 25. But I've gotten pretty broke off from a few injuries over the last few years too. I'm going to have a REALLY hard time as an old timer.

your college may have a club already, and if not, start your own. that's what i did as a grad student. after grad school i started a program in my town's parks and rec. that grew to 2 classes of over 80 kids. you just need to be organized.

that's a good tip. also, just try and find another guy who knows martial arts at your college, even if it isn't your style. you'll give each other an edge and some competition.
my karate instructor didn't do any martial arts at all during college, and he almost didn't come back afterwards. he said it was one of hte hardest things to just jump into, because you can forget all your technique and knowledge within a few months.

real good idea. always good to learn little tips/ diff techniques from other martial artists. also good to learn other fighting styles.

funny, i would have said the opposite. every now and then, just for grins, i run through my hyung from white belt on up. i'm surprised at how well i remember them. sometimes i hit a bump, but i can play with it a while and figure it out. it's been about 15 yrs since i was teaching/practicing regularly.

I do basic stuff daily. Example: When i wake up i do 5 sets of 20 push-ups and 5 sets of 20 sit-ups. I also do this before i go to sleep.
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday i work out at the gym, and do a little running (treadmill). I want to get into yoga, but for some reason, i recently started doing pilates (there is a reason, but it's a long story)! I also skate, surf, and do anything i can to be active outdoors.

I actually had a personal trainer put me on an offseason workout plan to stay in shape as well as gain muscle mass/muscle weight. I work out 5 days a week, alternating between upper body (arms, delts, lats, shoulders) and legs/ lower back/abs. My workout usually starts out with 2-4 sets of sprints (depends on the day and how i happen to be feeling), followed by suicide sprints, where I do something similar to lunges (but not quite lunges, i forget the name) in between each length. Then push-ups followed by weight training, with free weights instead of a machine. It's a pretty grueling workout, which is why i alternate between upper and lower body.

Pilates is such an amazing abs work out... I need to go more often but I went to this health spa with my mom for a week (it was all vegetarian... I was in heaven) but they had these intensive pilates classes I did every day and my abs were so freaking amazing... but my gym is so far away that I just run my little 3 mile loop (it is all hills though so it is a good workout still) for exercise here instead of classes and such... Heres what I do, works for me to progress my riding each season but may not for you, we are all different.
I tend to lift upper body and lower body weights alternating every day for 5-6 days a week, but not too much of both in same day. However, as we all know the meat head types with all muscle, no endurance, flexibility nor balance never survive on a board.
That is why stretching before and after working out and even doing cardio(running, biking, etc.) is crucial! Also, if you eat ****ty fast food every day dont expect results. I use the gnc whey protein shakes, you just put a scoop of that in some milk before and/or after you lift and it really helps you. It actually boosts your endorphins so you feel better mentally too and it gives you a zing of energy to lift before you work out and relieves the bit of fatigue after a workout. Hey its off season everyone, but depending on where ya are, not for long!! So, hit the gym, the bike, treadmill, track, whatever...skating a bit is never bad for that board balance...
Hope the advice helps one person at least, then its worth my while!
Peace everyone!

dude bmxing... seriously you get so much endurance and it builds all ur muscles arms legs chest back the only bad thing is if you fall down on a bike you might end up injuring yourself before you get to go snowboarding... but that and roller blading is more of a work out but i don't suggest that cause you'll get made fun of unless your good enough people don't care... but really you don't need ne shakes or nething just don't stop moving then after a while you won't even be able to sit still... i walked about 8 miles a day in denver... partly cause i didn't have a car and now that i live in el paso i don't even know ne one but i still walk all over the place cause i can't stand being inside and i've never broken 150

ok so i'm not even gonna pretend like i read all 17 pages of this thread, but maybe nobody's said this sutff yet:
I workout (lift) a couple of three times a week pretty regularly, i climb and do climbing esercises, i play ultimate frisbee every chance i get.... ooh and i take yoga (lots of balance and stretching stuff, good for climbing, and i feel like it will help riding a bit too).... once winter comes around i do a little more with the legs at the gym (squats, extensions, lower back/butt stuff) just bc boarding gets some of those muscles that other stuff forgets aboout. and i to take supplements when i lift (simple natural protien stuff, no weird chemical crap thats gonna f my head up), then on days i board i take potassium pills in the AM bc it helps hydrate and keeps muscles from cramping as easily...

I eat to stay in shape.
In the middle of spring I was 195lbs (I'm 6'1"), and now I'm 173lbs, and I've only been working out (on average) once or twice a week. I just make smarter decisions when it's time to eat and the pounds are still falling off.
When boarding season gets closer - and more importantly when I finish rehabbing my back, I'll do more weights (low volume) and more low-impact cardio like elliptical and stairclimbing. I'd love to play hoops or run again, but my knees ain't what they used to be, so I gotta choose my battles wisely (i.e. save them for snowboarding). The lost weight is already treating my knees right though, so who knows.

I have been focusing lately on my stomach & quads since I find that my quads burn and get tired about halfway down the mountain. Although I do weight lift for my arms and chest, I don't think that really makes much difference for snowboarding - you get quite a workout pushing yourself up all day.
I would say 3-4 times a week stretching out your legs would be a good idea and if you can do high rep / lower weight that should help with holding yourself up on your board all day.
Strenghtening your stomach never a bad idea for an sport.
I use those big swedish balls for stomach exercises - more comfortable and I feel i get more accomplished.

on my snowboarding team during the preseason we do dryland practicing, which is basically just running up and down a billion and a half stairs, running laps, lunges, wall sits, etc. wall sits help a lot, actually. [you sit at a 90 deg. angle as though in a chair but against a wall supporting yourself, great for legs.]
but when i cant do dryland i just try to eat healthy and run whenever i can....i hate running, but it helps to just do a little here and there. also keep yourself loose by stretching whenever you can...dont let your muscles die out just cause the season's over cause then you will have to build em all back up again...trust me, not the best. i hate excersizing but every time i'm running i just keep telling myself "its for snowboarding, its for snowboarding" and i always seem to run a little farther each time.

There are gyms that specificly cater to snowboarding specific workouts, if you talk to somebody involved in the course you can get an idea of what to do.
from my standpoint, I'd say squats, power cleans, and multiplanar lunges are your best bet.
Also go to google and type in snowboarding workout, and make a hybrid of a few different programs.

True, but it's easier to get off the ground when you're lighter, and you don't fall as hard either.

muscle prevents injuries. thats why football teams stress weight lifting so much. so when you land in an awkward position your less likely to get hurt.

Ive just started training for snowboarding, ive been lifting weights 4 times a week 2 days focusing on upper body, and the other 2 focusing on lower body. The other 3 days i take spinning classes. and every day i work abs. then before i go to bed i do pushups and more stuff for abs, then stretch. i had a problem last year with landing big hits and i think that if i strenghthen my core/leg muscles that it will help me absorb the landing better. also i think ill be less prone to getting hurt... plus i like going to the gym for some reason, maybe its that steam room... ahhh i love it.

Being 40+ (I know prehistoric for a snowboarder!), I've noticed a big difference in training and performance on the hill. Personally, I mt. bike, skate, and swim as much as possible. Work and family life kind of make it difficult, but I do my best. Also, I am not big on weightlifting because it's not my thing to sit in a gym... too much of an adrenaline junkie for it. lol
One thing I'm really big on is flexibility. After having knee reconstructive and rotator cuff surgery, I feel that's probably the most important thing to have. Granted, strength training will help with keeping you solid, the flexibilty will minimize injury and speed recovery when you do get hurt.
Last thought.. Riding is alot more fun that rehabbing... push your limits within YOUR OWN abilities!
Happy shreddin!

I go to the gym maybe 4-5x a week and make it fit my life... summer is more running and upper body... but by late summer/fall... its all about legs and core.
I have to do these physical therapy exercises for my shoulder anyway (from snowboarding). But then i add leg press and leg extension, and some hamstring stuff.
The faster you go, the harder edge you hold, the more load your legs have to handle... so i try to hold the leg press as long as possible.
I guess people with a home with walls can just sit against the wall for 60 seconds at a time and get some huge legs in no time.

\i had a problem last year with landing big hits and i think that if i strenghthen my core/leg muscles that it will help me absorb the landing better. also i think ill be less prone to getting hurt..
If you want to take big hits better, have a friend throw a medicine ball at your abs while you're standing up. start with a 6-7 pound ball and work your way up. If you can take the 12 pound ball getting launched at your stomach while flexing, you can take a decent hit.
wear a cup in case they miss. dont' mix this exercise with alcohol.

I highly recommend practicing Bikram yoga to get in shape for snowboarding. Thats the 105 degree 40 percent humidity yoga it's super strenuous, and it will make your balance endurance and vertical leap much better. Also you won't get hurt as much. It's a pretty cool workout because you can visbly see your improvement on a day to day basis.
Also skateboarding a lot helps

i do alot of stretching and endurance exercise, mainly cardio. bulk building will only inhibit your agility on the slope. i stretch out mainly the lower body because i find i use those alot, but then i do badminton and swimming. ive only been snowboarding for first time this season so i found my overall strength and tolerance for the sport was pretty poor. i do mainly glutus, quadracep hamstring and gastronemus exercise.

Skateboard and longboard your heart out... it's a good cardio work-out and gets those leg muscles really toned. I'm starting an afterschool workout program this year, lifting weights three times a week and cardio twice a week. I'm a pansy so it's going to be hard, but i'm not looking to get ripped, just toned and core strength. Core strength is the most important thing to work on for snowboarding, it will help prevent injuries!
Seeing as not everyone has these options available, my favorite thing to do is pop in snowboard DVD's and then indoboard while i watch, and try imitating as many tricks as possible. www.indoboard.com (http://www.indoboard.com) for those of you that don't know... its a great workout and your balance will increase a ton!

Strength training (weights) is important. However, personally, I think flexibility and aerobic training is even more important. Aside from keeping you limber and able to tweak airs and what not, it will help in minimizing damage and recovery time in the unfortunate event yo get broke off hard. I know, I had knee reconstruction and rotator cuff surgery. The first thing they work on in rehab is range of motion. If you are flexible before the surgery, you will come back WAY faster.
As for strength training, it's important to help out in many ways. The biggest one here would be core muscles (back and mid section), to help spin and absorb impact from bumps, jumps and falls. Yeah, it's important to build the legs up too! However, witht that said, as an instructor, I see alot of people trying to muscle their way through alot of stuff that they could easily flow through if they rode more efficiently. (think Gumby!) This comes out alot when I ride with alot of my bros in their 20's with less experience. I see them try to fight through trees, and bumps (or avoid them altogether), while I ride relaxed. At the end of the run/day, they are dead, and I'm chill. I'm the first to admit, I'm no super-fit freak, and I got several years on them... So there's gotta be something to it.
'nuff said...I'm out! hehe

this reflects a deep seated contempt for authority. you do not respect the opinions of others. you were not held enough as an infant. you lack self-esteem. oh, and your stance is too narrow.
