people voluntarily listen to tool?Yeah, it's amazing what some people will listen to...like that hardcore/punk/whatever-it-is you seem so blindingly obsessed by!
Some people actually have varied tastes and can enjoy lots of different types of music, without being so narrow-mindedly focused on a single genre. It would be a very boring world if everyone only listened to what you regard as quality music.
What is the problem you have with Tool's music anyway?

Not only is it a small venue, it's one of the coolest places I've been in for a concert. I really liked Tower when I was there.

I was actually going to say that you should give it a try... I mean, Tool is very political by nature as well as anti-catholic. Just what every good rebellious punk girl would like.
Listen to the song Aenima, give the lyrics a go... You might be surprised.
I like Tool, I like Electro-Pop, I like a wide variety of music... and I don't ever ask why people "Voluntarily listen" to the music they do? Simply because it's not my taste
We all have our tastes... ****, I even enjoy that horrible Kelly Clarkson song.

****ing amazing. As can be expected. 10,000 Days and Rosetta Stoned are the "epic" songs clocking in at over 11 minutes each and are both great in different ways. Rosetta Stoned is just intense. For me Tool has always been about Maynard's vocals and Justin's bass. I mean the guitars and drums have always been unparalleled as well but that's just what stuck out to me but I think Danny Carey outdid himself this time cause I'm all about the drums on this one.
And come to think of it the guitar really stands out too. Especially on Jambi it goes from like chugging metal to Floydesque.
Anyway yeah, you'll all enjoy it.

Yeah, no, the 11 minute song thing made me shudder. And? Why can't you have an 11 minute song? Does everything have to fit to your preferred 2.5-minute punk formula? Does everything have to be simplified to the basic drum/bass/2-guitar/voice verse-chorus punk song structure? Maybe some people prefer there music a little more complex and engaging than a under 3-minute punk song? Maybe some people prefer more than the punk minimal production methods? Maybe people want more emotion from their music than the fast happy punk tune, maybe people want some slow darkness and feeling in their music?
It's all personal preference anyway, everyone has different tastes, not many people have your closed-minded view of music that it is not worthwhile if it is not punk. Why jump into a thread and put sh!t on everyone elses musical taste just because you don't like it? A number of people are discussing an upcoming album by a band that a lot of us really enjoy, and you imply that no one would want to listen to it by their own choice.

errrr.. I meant 11 minutes of tool made me shudder... and I believe I have seen you mock people's taste and then say you had the right to express your opinion (any thread having to do with legbags or bandanas?)... so why are you crying?

Im a fan of tool. Their drummer is great and he is one of the drummers I've looked up to since I've started playing drums.
I would love to go to that show in Philly but I've heard rumored ticket prices of $50-$60. I wouldn't be suprised either.

i simply must go to the boston show. as for the 11 minute songs, i find that generally when a good rock band puts out a long song (longer than 7 or 8 minutes), it's generally the best song(s) on that particular album. 2 examples off the top of my head: memento - figure 8 and nightwish - ghost love score

I think that what music you want to listen to is a different thing to wearing a bandana or legbag as a fashion item in an attempt to be steezy like some pro you have seen wearing the same thing.
Yep, you have a right to express your opinion, and I have a right to cry about it.
I'm crying cause I'm a pus sy, and I don't have my mum anymore to prepare me a warm saucer of milk, a nice soft pillow, and give me cuddles when I'm sad.

Ok so anyway, I shared this with Simon earlier cause I always found this funny considering how deep and dark Tool is, but Maynard used to do stand up comedy and apparently was pretty funny.

Really? You don't think people listen to certain music to be cool? Or to fit in? I think some people use music exactly the same way they use fashion... to conform/not conform.

Guess I hadn't considered that, as I listen to what sounds good to me, not what is going to make me fit in with others.

Yeah, well a lot of people wear what looks good to them, not what is going to make them fit in with others as well.
And just like music, everyone is at some level influenced by what is currently popular...

Yeah, well a lot of people wear what looks good to them, not what is going to make them fit in with others as well.
And just like music, everyone is at some level influenced by what is currently popular...My choices of snowboarding clothing are based on functionality for the intended use, and then on colour I like within the available colours of that functional choice. I guess that a lot of people wear what looks good to them, and by wanting to look good they have an intended audience whom they want to look good for. I think that wearing bandanas and legbags is generally due to a desire to fit into a certain image.
My choice of music is based on what sounds good to me, though I suppose that I am being influenced by what is currently popular, in that by being popular it is more likely that I will hear it and be able to decide if I like it or not. As well as being exposed to the music that friends play, and being exposed to new music that they listen to. But the decision on whether to like it or not is not based on trying to fit in with them or anyone else, it is solely based on my emotional response to the music.

Yeah, so with fashion and music both, it's personal taste, I think... but snochica is right, that taste can be influenced by different factors, including the desire to fit a certain image for both fashion and music...

10,000 days is not my favorite song on there (although by far not a bad song) but it has this one part that is probably my favorite part on the album. The part that starts out with the lyrics: "You're the only one that can hold your head up high. Shake your fist at the gate saying 'I've come home now'" and ends with "Give me mine." One of those parts that just sends chills down your spine.
But I think the best song on the album is Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned.
And I think Simon's original question was how it compared to Lateralus. I think it's better. It's a tough call though.

I haven't heard the new songs yet... but I'm wondering how much you guys liked Lateralus? Personally, it was my least favorite Tool CD. So, I'm thinking it might not be too hard to top.
Opinions?
