a local punk band here in greater vancouver... with MANY avid followers including me. They're really unknown... they only have an EP that they sell at shows :(

OOOh, what about Tyravyo!!? They're kind of obscure--Finnish pop-punk. In Finnish. And the website's in Finnish, too, which makes it doubly harder to get hold of CDs and merchandise... if anyone wants songs or the self-titled album, msn me.
Anyone who's heard of Tyravyo gets a thousand kudos from me ^_^

Ok here's more. Sheesh, I'm going to have like 17 posts in this thread. I keep on remembering all these bands!

Sneakers & Lace. An amusing 60s band that sang about skateboarding mostly. I wish there would be a band like this except snowboarding instead of skateboarding!

The Fruit Bats. 60s-esque indie-pop! Very fun to listen to!

Dogs Die In Hot Cars ... they're british :)
Meiko Kaji ... M83 ... Man or Astro-man ... Millions of Dead Cops/Magnus Dominus Corpus etc ... Melt Banana ... The Mermen ... Mia Doi Todd... Morning Musume... The Mountain Goats. Just scrolling through itunes here.

um... I have to go now.

Chiodos is pretty sweet, but like, with the piano in the background that's sometimes on a completely different key than the guitars can sound dischordant(?) and like, trippy. but it's cool stuff. Secondhand Serenade is a good acoustic kind of emo music, it's good stuff if you like acoustic music.

Metallica... albums before their self-titled album are worth listening to in my opinion. I'm a fan of Ride the Lightning. Unfortunately, they're not a band that aged well... although they still seem popular enough, for some reason.
and what about Sepultura's Schizophrenia for good thrash...

ONLY 5?!! Ok, ok - here are some underground hip-hoptions: (I'm sure there are some heads who've heard a few of these, but I wouldn't say any of them are 'widely' or 'well' known).

1. Fila Brazillia
2. Unspoken Heard
3. Homeliss Derilex
4. Fat Jon (NOT LIL Jon!)
5. Whiskey Blanket (reppin from Boulder, CO - you can find 'em on Myspace)

what's with all the hating of mainstream music? except for the really trendy bands a lot of them are better than unknown bands. either cause they are better or have had more luck... or money

littlelostdope
09-09-2006, 12:16 AM
why would luck or money make them any better than unknown bands? some mainstream stuff is good but most of the bands have turned 360 degrees from what they started from (which is usually better) just to fit the mold of what they think everybody wants to listen to. now do you understand why there's "all the hating of mainstream music"; it's void of creative thinking.

kyew77

hell yea dude mainstream sucks ****. rap is a perfect example. they've all lost origionality and now all there is is rap about sex and chicks shakin their asses. and all the other mainstream rock is spewing out **** about how depressed they are over the're lost girlfriends. they all lose their identitys with their fame

p.s. well said littlelostdope

ilikesnow
09-09-2006, 01:30 AM
i agree with littlelostdope, and not all mainstream rock is about depression, but its still not good,
basically you start out with a good band, some label says hey play what WE wrote or like, and we'll pay you. Generally bands have good looking people, do you think only good-looking people are good enough for everyone to like, NO, good-looking people are good enough to create a good marketing image.

ashleyistwisted
09-09-2006, 03:37 AM
ok so everybody is dissing mainstream music.. i myself love some mainstream.. but thats just my personal taste i guess..i do agree though that bands are changing[most mainstream i like is older stuff] .. i think its more the record companys fault.. like victory records.. they should go fall down a pit and die
does anyone know who tony brummel is?
well he's the d!ck who runs victory records and bases his success on cheating bands out of money rightfully theirs to make more money for himself. hes also the one to tell them how to do.. well.. everything.. for this reason many bands have left victory.

yes i do agree there are soo many bands out there better than mainstream.. you just have to look hard enough..

littlelostdope

aha, but there in lies the problem. some bands are letting them screw them over and not caring because it makes them famous.

btw..non-mainstream rock is also talking about how depressed they are, ex girlfriends etc. so i dont think its the fame thats the problem.. its the genre

the only reason non-mainstream rock does this is to imitate mainstream. "imitate what is successful to become successful yourself" the thing these bands don't notice is, it's all about trend and that trend is dying, they're going absolutely nowhere.

Tony Brummel is a scumbag. Definitely deserved to be beat up by Hoods for ****ing them over.

I love how Victory went from one of the best labels in hardcore to putting out really ****ty pop punk.

modest mouse wasn't big until after float on started playing though so it's not the fame that made their sound change
and nofx doesn't have to impress their record lable because they are thier record lable

appleseed cast, the album leaf, an angle, ....if you like emo/poppy sort of stuff hidden in plain view and armor for sleep are really good.....i don't know if brand new really counts, but they're a fave....the format is bitchin, the city on film, criteria, the decemberists, owen, eh, a bunch more too....but you'll probably like them if you're into a little slower, indie type stuff....of course im like the biggest emery fan ever, too.....i saw that got mentioned on like the 2nd or third page, you've probably heard of them, but have you ever listened to the mars volta? they're incredible.....

i love the Matches. they're semi-popular, i only know a few people who know them.

a not-very-popular band i think is Dredg. they are so good, and really good live too.

i'm also going to plug my friend's band. lots of screaming, but still very good.

Same here, but if it goes mainstream i keep listening. unlike some people who decide the band is suddenly gay because everyone knows about them. Its frustating though when people come up to you and are like "have you heard these guys before" and your like "yeah about 4 years ago. I have there first cd" and they are like "no they only have 1 cd" those people are the people i think are pricks because they dont know anything a band the supposedly love.
A specific example is Relient K for all of you people out there mmhmm is not there first cd it is like there 5 or something.

true story
actually i only like a couple mmhmm songs, the best came earlier.

relient k isnt really "good" but i like them because i like the message and the sound isnt horrible.

sorry all you mtv lovers, but relient k IS christian. that song "be my escape" isnt about teenage angst.....(same with switchfoot, who kinda turned into mainstream)

it kinda makes me angry also when people know all the words to a song and sing along to it and dont even know what it means. it sorta kills the message which takes the essence of why a song was good out of it. sad day.

fyi. christian bands are popular among christians, FAR from mainstream. but then they start playing on the radio, mtv....gets worse....then they feel they have some need of "pleasing the public" so they put out a couple crappy albums without saying the word "jesus" in their hit song so they will have a wider audience. hmm. but yeah my point was that a lot of these bands seem almost underground (not refering to the genre but just the term underground) and then when they become mainstream they lose what made them good.

It goes the same with every good band. I like weezer so much i have Dashboard Confessionals tribute to weezer. But i also like Dashboard Confessional. And speaking of Dashboard, Dusk and summer is not the good album, its okay but the best is Places you have come to fear the most. best song is "the best deceptions" just so everyone knows.
