I read the entire article and a lot of it makes sense to me. America has wasted so many billions of dollars on this war on drugs and our prison system is bursting at the seams from overcrowding due to mandatory sentencing for first time drug users. It is my opinion that weed should be 100% legal and treated just like alchohol. I really don`t want to see legalization of things like Coccaine and Heroin as well as Meth...but I would rather see the use dealt with as a health care issue and focus on treatment rather than incarceration. Like the Mexican legislation, the sale and distribution should be dealt with criminally and with harsher penalties. In dealing with the drug issues in this country, we must look at the economic factors that lead to drug abuse such as health care, living wages and jobs. People who have hope for the the future are less likely to turn to drug and alchohol abuse.

I agree with basically everything you said except for this. This is basically true 50% of the time.

I'm a teenager who lives in a wealthy town you could call it. We have an extremely good public school system (In the top 5 for the state I believe) and we have one of the most well known private high school in the world (Phillips Academy Andover). People live in big houses, have a good future on the path. Many people do succeed but basically around 70% of the high school will tell you that they have smoked or done something with illegal substances before. Basically everyone drinks at the high school too. Most people get away with it, but some dont. One of my bests friends brother recently was expelled from school for picking fights and threatening people. He is an extreme alchoholic, pothead, coke addict and has tried many other things. He now lives at a rehab center and has basically no future ahead of him.

And the age of starting is starting to go lower. I'm only in middle school right now and probably about 20% of our class smokes frequently. All of that 20% drinks along with another 10% making 30% of the class fluent drinkers.

What i'm trying to say is that in a lot of these wealthy towns you have access to lots of money at which you can buy lots of drugs with.

But getting back on topic, I'm kind of 50/50 on the whole Mexico thing. I think that because of this, Mexico will become much less of a tourist destination in places like Cancun and Puerto Escondito. I think this will also make for more smuggling into our country but I dont know. We'll see what happens.

See original post....

Yeah, you are right on that...I had`nt given enough thought to that aspect.....I wonder what makes a person with a lot of potential like that self destruct to such a degree. Good point though.... Yeah, I think it will cause us more trafficiking problems as a result, but I think Mexico has realized what a losing battle it is so they are redirecting their resources to try to attack the problem by going after the manufacture, sale and transport of drugs rather than focus on the user.

Makes sense to me. Why throw someone in jail for using a substance that >you< think is bad?

That's a lot of peyote. It does kind of make sense as Snow Wolf says, but now a lot of people are going to be going to Mexico a lot more to get drugs. At least they won't be put in Mexican prison now though... I know a couple of people who went there for a couple days and one almost got killed by a guy coming down off herion because he was snoring to loudly.
