Who here does their own tune ups and how often?

SnoChick

The fact that I don't trust anyone else with my board kinda limits that option... how often? depends on the condition, but about every 3 days on the snow... and always the night before an alpine race (wanna make sure I have the good wax on there)

Every now and then, I'd work on my friends boards too in exchange for free food, ride up to the mountain, or stay at the cabin for free...

I just wax my board myself. I do it every other day on the snow, before season and after season. I also have the edges done at a pro shop after the season.

Going to learn how to maintain my board myself. I don't get to the mountain often enough to have to worry about crazy upkeep, but this year I'm gonig to try and get some more days in.

i always do my own and its fun. they way how i see it that no one else is going to care more about my own gear then me. that why i learned how to do. i wax my board about every three full days on the slopes, give or take. edges sharped when needed. debur with every wax job. and clean my board and binding after each day of riding.

learning how to do my own gear took alot of online research and trial and error to figure out what works for my riding style on which board in what snow conditions. i also took toured two local shops to watched how they did them.

Wow, wax every 3 days? My poor snowboard is even more neglected than I thought.

They sell some pretty nice tune-up kits that come with everything you need to do it yourself for around 80 bucks...We got one of those to do our edges w/ the file, iron for was (and its almost pocket size...ohhh burned!) tons o wax and some lil cool tool and a bunch of other stuff...needless to say, i do my tune-ups myself.

I wax about every 2-3 days on the snow, and always the night before slalom or boardercross race. I also keep rub-on wax with me and do a quick wax job mid-day if needed.

You can probably pick up everything you need for about $40 bucks. I bought a $6 iron from Walmart and it works great! Just don't forget to keep it on low... edge sharpener $12, scraper $2, file $5, metal bristle brush $10, edge deburrer $2, stone $4...

i also used to worry about this then i started mixing wax on my base. i use a harder wax around the edges and a softer wax in the middle. the wax wears more evenly.

for me, i throw some wax on once for every 7 times i go. or if i jacked my board on rail or rocks, then strip and apply ptex. for freestyle i just keep my edges dull and freeride as sharp as needed.

I tune my own board. I wax about every 2 or 3 days I ride or whenever it feels needed. My board has an "OOZE self-waxing base" where supposedly there is wax mixed into the base but I wax it regularely anyways. I also dull my edges somewhat, and do P-tex jobs when needed. I carry a tool with me on the hill because I love my drakes but the bindings often need to be tightened while Im riding.

i do all that stuff on my own, bevel the edges to 88, hot wax every 3 times, with rub-on wax inbetween then where its needed. always deburr, and detune a little everyday with a pocket stone, which makes a huge difference. round the edges at the tip and tail. i kinda like doin it on my own

i always check my board before i ride, and check it after. i just want to make sure i get the most out of my board so it doesn't die on me after a month. i do everythign myself, like waxing and tuning. i need a new iron though for wax, my cat knocked the other one off the table and busted it.

So, do you think this kit is worth it? http://snowboards-for-sale.com/one_ball_jay/hot_wax_tuning_kit_nylon/

I checked with my shop and the cost of getting things done there is crazy. This kit will pay for itself really quickly. Is there something else I should get along with this?

you also need a base cleaner. You can get that from any snowboard shop. also get the right wax for the temp you are riding. Dont want to get 40 degree wax when your riding in 10 degree weather

yeah thats a much better deal. the one snochica first posted its cheaper to buy the stuff seperate. but i too have that dakine one. its a great starter set.

base cleaner is horrible for your base. once u get good at waxing u will only need to use base cleaner about 2 or 3 times a season. i try to use it as little as possible and at the beginning of each season i get a base grind done at a local shop for the trade of a six pack of beer.

point being, dont rely on base cleaner. it drys out ur base so it doesnt hold wax as well. try to use it as little as possible

Speaking of this base grind thing.... both of my boards are new. One was riden 2x. Were they ground at the manufacturer? Should I get that done? How do I know?

I do know that the base of my Nitro is smooth as silk. Whereas the base of my Rome almost feels like there are microscopic hairs all over.

wax doesnt matter. u cant really over do it. but as for the sharpen/detune. everytime is way too much. i only sharpen a few times thoughout the whole season. east coasts would have to more due to ice.
u live in steamboat dont u. u probably dont even have to sharpen unless u got the edge caught on a rock or rail or something to dull it or nick it

if u had only riddent them a few times. then dont worry about it.

differnent manufacters have different bases. that rougher base u said with the little hairs, that will be a harder base. its stronger, but will hold less wax.

It's a sintered base.. I know that. But I remember reading somewhere that those little hairs meant something, and I almost think it had to do with how it leaves the manufacturer, ground or unground. They're both high quality boards, I just don't know if the Rome's base is ready for snow as-is, out of the box, so to speak.

Ahhh.... here you go... This is what I'm talking about. Those hairs are left as a result of a stone gind...

If the grind’s texture is very fine and tight (cold, mid-winter conditions), use a brass brush. Either way, the same technique applies. Brush the base in longitudinal strokes from nose to tail. What you’re doing is removing all the "micro-hairs" left deep in the grooves by the grinding process. Although minute, these will create speed-robbing drag if neglected. Brush until the small flecks of base material don’t collect on the bristles and the base looks shiny and smooth.

look at your base. take your finger nails and run them the width of your board. it should feel like cordaroy and make a sound. this is called base structure. the more structure you have the better your board glides on a wetter surface. if you don't have any you then want to get a grind. during spring you always wanna get a deep grind. it takes the suction off your base so it glides faster. some boards come with more structure than others. Salomon is known for their really sweet board structure. other companys like Never Summer for example don't even grind their boards at the factory. so i do it for people when i sell them a Never Summer.

Yea, I dont really trust ne1 with my board. I do my own waxing from now on as well. Mostly because I slapped a guy a $20 at White Pass to tighten/clean my bindings and hand wax my board and it looked good. Then I took one warm up run down a single Diamond run and looked at my board and all the wax had been washed off and my bindings were loose as hell...... Case in point: Your board is only as good as you treat it. So take care of your own stuff. Haha.

Save money and do it yourself, I wax and debur every two or three days. When a shop waxes your board they usually use one lowgrade all or cold temp wax for everybody. When you do it yourself you can pick what temp you need or how much flouro. Also, if you have an expensive board with a graphite base you're really wasting it if you're not putting a graphite wax on it.

BTW does anyone else here have a graphite base? I really hate working with that wax, it crumbles and it's hard to scrape.

i wax my board about once a month or whenever i want to...i can't say how many times snowboarding that is, but probably like 5-7. don't worry, that number will raise this year.

also i'm really glad my nitro came with detuned edges except in the very middle, unlike my burton which was sharp all around even the nose and tail.

I believe this was once another thread but I will play along anyway. I always do my own work on my boards. p-tex, wax, edges and miner fixes. The only thing I have the shop do is base welding and a once a year base grind. I bought a kit a long time ago and then just kind of added to over the years. But I have big coarse file and big fine file for my edges. Lots of different types of p-tex and wax, Iron, edge stones, plastic and metal scrapers, and corks for corking in the wax. You need to cork in your wax after you put it on especially if you don't use an iron. The cork push's the wax into the groves of the base so it sticks better.

i just got a kit like that one from REI today, it has everything but the iron, which i already have. but anyway the kit i got (Da Kine Deluxe tune-up kit) was on sale for 29.00 and i got my iron for 35 last year so it may be on sale too by now... so it comes out a little cheaper that way. if you are serious about getting that kit you might what to check REI if there is one near you.
