I've been all over europe and i'd have to say the best place i've ever been is a small place in the french sector of switzerland the city is leysin. i did my best boarding there! it's so beautiful and breathtaking. your looking down at a sea of clouds and then you board your way through it. i love the alps because most places don't have as many restrictions like YOU MUST BOARD BETWEEN THESE POSTS!!! screw that i like freedom to explore powder, as long as you don't kill yourself they're pretty cool about leting you do your own thing.

Only been to Colorado and Utah but I have to say if you want to get away from crowds and want some damn good powder to ride on hit up Utah for sure. Brighton is nice, not the biggest spot but nice back country runs if ya can find em! Snowbird is a good resort, more crowded, more skiiers, but a huge mountain with a lot of different runs.

I live in Pocatello Idaho so I have about 200 ski areas in about a 200-mile radius. But my top 3 are my local Mt. Pebble Creek, Teton Village, Jackson Hole Wy. and Snow Basin Ogden Ut.

I just got back from Austria for thanksgiving weekend. i was on Schlittenhohe that was pretty good. i don't know if you have T bar's in the states but if you do you understand how much they suck well over here in europe alot of places have T bars which are snowboarder unfriendly well Schlittenhohe you can take the lift to any point you want and there are some tbars in smaller areas but if you board a little farther down you can get to the bottom of the chairs and take that to the same spot.

Based on my limited East Coast experience I'd have to say I like Killington the best. It's from a pretty short list though. I probably have only been to 7 or 8 different resorts. Killington, Whiteface, Sugarloaf, Hunter, Camelback, Shawnee, Mt. Creek and I think that's it?! But Killington was deffinately my best experiance, except when I was riding solo and got lost...that's a whole nother story in it self...

GOT WOOD? shasta is pretty cool too on a good snow day. but the snow out here on the west coast is the best. our mountins steal it all then other places get what's left

Mammoth Mountain, Lake Tahoe Area Resorts (Kirkwood, Squaw Valley, Heavenly...), Park City

Out of all these resorts I have been to my favorite is Mammoth and I consider it the best by far. I did really like Park City's park tho.

I have never boarded on the East Coast or in Colorado so I have no comment and my opinion is pretty biased against anywhere out of California. I definetly need to travel to different places to go riding.

colorado...not as friendly as utah but still i like breckenridge. word to the wise, dont do the night boarding at copper, it sucks and is not maintained well, so id say Park City Utah, and Whistler of course cuz theres no comparason to whistler.

Obviously Lake Tahoe. The snowiest city in the country, Blue Canyon, is right there, so they get some of the sickest snow. Kirkwood this year-810 inches. I stick to the small resorts there that way no tourists!!! Alpine Meadows, slowling becoming popular, and the mountain rite up the highway, Mt Rose. Those places are the ****.

I love reading about those stories of the epic trips they take to New Zeland. After watching Chris Coulters First Hand on Fuel, then i really knew what it was like. It looks sweet. I was also on a lift at Alpine Meadows with two people from Australia and they told me the best place to go there and i forgot where it was. All i remember is that it was Mt Buller they said. Can you help me out SimonInAustralia?

SimonInAustralia
06-13-2005, 08:31 AM
The main two resorts near where I live are Perisher-Blue and Thredbo, they are about 2 hours away.

Mt Buller is in Victoria, and I have not been there. I don't think it is the best choice though, from what I've heard. I have been to Mt Hotham in Victoria, which is good. There is also Falls Creek, near Mt Hotham.

I would go to NZ rather than Australia if your trip is just for snowboarding. I try to go to NZ once a year, and am heading back there in August for another month long trip, cruising to wherever the best snow is in a motorhome/campervan.

I guess the choice of which resorts/fields to visit really depends on what sort of riding you want to do.

I freeride, as I have not spent any time learning park/pipe, so I prefer the best freeriding options in NZ. I have also only been to the South Island, and there are a few options on the North Island as well.

In NZ I prefer the small club fields, run by ski clubs. These club fields have 2 or three rope tows up the middle or side of a bowl, sometimes linked sort of end to end, so I guess it's like just one lift up the hill. Some of the rope tows are simply run by running the rope over the axle of a tractor that is up on blocks.

They are not your standard rope tows, you ride them with what is called a nutcracker, which looks like a metal nutcracker that you use to crack nuts. The nutcracker is attached by a short rope to a large belt around your waist or a harness (like a climbing harness). You put your arm over the tow rope and grab it with one hand (or both) until you are moving as fast as the rope, then swing the nutcracker over the tow rope and close it around the rope, as if the rope is the nut your are going to crack, then take your hand/arm off the rope and just hold the nutcracker closed onto the tow rope. Since the nutcracker is also attached to your harness, it drags you up the hill. You have to make sure your hand, arm, and body is away from the rope though, cause the rope runs over large metal pulleys as you go up the hill, and if your hand is in the way it gets squashed between the rope and the pulley.

These rope tows are pretty hardcore, that's why they recommend that beginners don't come to the club fields. They are harder to ride than a T-Bar. You keep both feet strapped in to ride them. The one at Mount Olympus goes fast, I reckon it's as fast as a quad chair, with your nutcracker clanging over the pulleys every 10-20 metres. There are not any dedicated lift operators, but the ski patrol guys will help you out with any problems and give some instruction on use of the tows. There is a wire running up next to the tow that you pull to stop the tow in an emergency.

The good club fields in the Canterbury area, in the central area of the NZ South Island, inland to the West from the city of Christchurch, and near a town called Methven, are Craigieburn, Mount Olympus and Broken River (25 minute hike from carpark to lift, with a goods lift for your gear). A little further away is Temple Basin, which has about a 45 minute hike in from the carpark, and a flying fox to drag your gear up. The club fields are small, and often a bit of hiking from the top of the rope tows helps to get to good (or better) lines.

The club fields all have accomodation, usually dorm style, and it's reasonably priced.

These clubfields are only really for freeriding though. If you want larger commercial fields with park and pipe you would go to Mount Hutt, which is right next to Methven, or to the fields further south around Lake Wanaka and Queenstown. Around Lake Wanaka you have Treble Cone, Cardrona and Snow Park, probably the most respected fields in NZ. And around Queenstown you have Remarkables and Coronet Peak, Queenstown seems to be the main snow/party town.

Another good/small hill inbetween Methven and Lake Wanaka is Ohau, they have a single double chair up the middle of the bowl.

Cause there are so many different places to go to, I think it is best to have transport and go where it is best. I like the motorhome option, though it does get cold at night. Some of the access roads are pretty sketchy though, and you wouldn't take a larger motorhome up to the smaller club fields, you would have to hitch up with someone else. Often at Mount Olympus you would only get up the access road with a 4WD, and you have to use a two way radio from a hut at the bottom to radio the lodge on the hill to make sure the road is clear (both of snow and of traffic coming down).

is nz better then whistler u think?

No, I don't think NZ compares to Whistler...Whistler has it all pow, parks, pipes, long runs, backcountry, nightlife, etc. Everything is in one place, and it's big. Only problem of being so good is the long lift lines I guess, and being costal the pow probably isn't as light and dry as more inland resorts.

NZ is a lot of smaller places, all spread out over the country, not all concentrated in the one place like Whistler. Runs are not as long, facilities are not as well developed, etc.

Just different I guess, good choice to try for a summer holiday for people in the northern hemisphere.

There are so many places to go, not enough time and money!

I'm keen to get to France in December/January for 6 weeks, hopefully Chamonix (big/expensive resort), and I have been told that La Grave is really good as well (small/single chair lift, extremely steep).

Simon do you know anything about the NZ Heli Boarding?

I have only been up for one day of heli in NZ.

I guess like most heli operators, they probably can't let you ride really steep lines/chutes/etc., I guess the insurance companies won't let them.

I went up with Methven Heliskiing, they get you into some awesome terrain, but I wanted steeper/tighter/more exciting lines to ride...
http://www.heliskiing.co.nz/methven/about.htm

I guess it depends on what your level of ability is, and what you expect out of it. If you do want it steep and tight, I think you need to let them know that you're an 'expert' level rider. And I guess it also depends on the ability of the group that you get put into, cause everyone in the group has to ride the same lines.

There is a smaller setup that runs out of Wanaka, called Backcountry Helicopters, that apparently will let you ride what you want (within reason), as long as they are OK with it and think it is safe...
http://www.heliskinz.com/

I think a smaller setup like Backcountry Helicopters might be a better choice than the larger operators like Harris Mountain Heliskiing, also based in Wanaka, who seem to be more geared towards tourists...
http://www.heliski.co.nz/

If you look at some of the photos on these websites you see skiers/boarders taking fresh lines down the middle of wide open powder bowls. If that is enough for you, then you would have a good time. If you want to get something steeper and tighter, I'm not sure if you could get it, it's really up to the operators.

I tried to get up with Backcountry Heli last year, but the weather didn't look too promising on the couple of days I was down in that area of NZ, so I didn't go up with them.

I was speaking to a guy from the US when I was in NZ last year, he said that he was up in Alaska with one of the big heli operators, I think it was H20 Guides, and they kept telling him to slow down, not to ride so fast. I think they were also pissed at him cause he was trying to avoid the expensive all-inclusive luxury accomodation/food/etc., I guess they make a lot of money off of that side of it as well. He ended up with one of the smaller operators and was a lot happier with them. So I guess it's the same all over, if you end up with a larger operator that is more geared towards moving tourists through, you end up with less freedom.

Yep, that's what a couple of my friends do, lots of road drops/car shuffles, as well as hiring/using snowmobiles to get in to ride.

One of them does a combination of heliboarding, road drops, and using skis to skin up and ski down (they have been skiing since they were a couple of years old and are good at both boarding and skiing).

yeah I've been up Togwotee a bunch of times. It's a cool place. I know of a lot of good back country places, but I suck at telling people how to get places so yeah.... if you explore you can find good stuff. Have fun!
Targhee is open forever and even when it isn't open there's still snow... I went snowboarding up there on the 8th and it was AMAZING!!!! That's awesome that there are people from this sort of region here.

I usually drink a Sparks on the lift up after the first run. Sometimes a second Sparks is necessary if I partied too much the night before. And we always make time for a stop in the trees. If I had to choose which I liked better I'd rather smoke then drink.8)

Vail, CO.. no other place like it.. it makes all the moutains in the north east look like bunny hills.. including Killington.. but for some good north east riding i'd head up to Maine.. Sundae River was an awesome spot to ride.. no wide trails.. good tree runs.. and blistering cold winds..

I think Vail is by far the best place. I've been to Whistler Blackcomb, The Canyons, Mt. Snow, and Beaver Creak, and Vail is just the best for everything.

I live in Virginia so there is only one place to Board in Virginia and it is 4 hours away from where I live. But I only go there when my friends take a trip up there I usually go to Snowshoe. Very crowded on lifts that are near beginner areas. And I used to go to Timberline which has some awesome backcountry.

whistler/blackcomb is the best place i've been so far....on a clear day, you can see forever, and thats what you get to look at when you ride....plus the lodges have awesome pizza.

Yeah most places in Lake Tahoe. My favorites are ALpine Meadows, they have a sick park and probably the best early season park in tahoe (not this year). Alpine also gets a ****load of snow (around 500 inches a year) and has amazing backcountry and cliffs and chutes and powder and steeps and everything. My second favorite is my backyard. All the backcountry with my snowmobiles i want.

Hhmm.. Jackson Hole for the Drops, Telluride for the Steeps, Monarch for no crowds (and best catwalk kicker), Mary Jane for the bumps, Cumberland Pass for Back country & Snow Creek for the sickest small mountain experience in Missouri.

What do you recommend for steeps in CO? How does Telluride compare to Crested Butte for steeps?

Don't get any ideas in your head, we're not drivin to telluride! I love it, but it's farther south than silverton, we'd have to take a day off for the 8 hour drive to WP, and skip steamboat entirely!

Telluride is way fun, it's just that crested butte works better cuz it's on our way back, and it's still a great mountain from all I hear!

Whistler/Blackcomb definitely.

First time I went there, it was sunny during the day and dumped 12-18" at night. Fresh tracks every morning.

Bear for freestyle

East coast - Sugarbush, Bolton, Okemo, Stowe, Bromley...

Exactly... my friend Mark was in CO last week and said Keystone has a SICK park. Even better than Breck's. He's all over the east coast, CO, and Park City.

kelly
02-20-2006, 10:00 PM
Yeah, keystone is known for their park, as are breck and winter park - breck's seem less interesting at first glance though, because they're spread over the mountain (the big jumps are in one place, the rails in another). Keystone's is kind of all together, so it seems HUGE.

Well so far the best place I've gone was Whister Blackcomb, BC. I want to go to Banff as I hear it is amazing. I'm also going to Sun Valley March 4th for a week, I've heard a lot of awesome things about SV too.

Out of my teeny tiny list (Shawnee, Mtn Creek, Jack Frost, Big Boulder, Hidden Valley, Stratton, Whiteface and Killington) I'd go with Whiteface. One trail (Park north) just stuck in my mind as the best non-park trail I've ever been on. It's like a boarder-X run with fun table tops.

Following the same format as RideLsDh - Out of: Killington, Elk, Hunter, Cammelback, Stowe, Mountain Creek, Blue, Shawnee, Jack Frost, Big Boulder, Windham, Montage, Bear Creek, Telluride, Vail, Aspen Snowmass, Aspen Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, Steamboat, Copper, Winter Park/Mary Jane, Wolf Creek, Purgatory (Durango), Silverton, Crested Butte, Breck, Keystone, Sunlight, Loveland, A-Basin, Beaver Creek, and Tahoe... (WHEW, I think I got them all)...

I like Steamboat, Telluride, Silverton, Snowmass, and Wolf Creek. But for a daily mountain, Copper is my poison.
