Instruction on a different note... (classes)

OK, I’m the head snowboard instructor and park designer for a small Midwest resort. (God I miss living in Eagle-Vail) anyway… I have to admit I am proud of the park that I built. I have some of the biggest and hardest rails in the area, and we don’t have a lot of hill but I did manage to fit in a nice 15’ high kicker with a nice steep landing to keep me appeased and some of my up and coming riders happy.

I have a great snowmaking crew that understands what I want and how to build things, but they are older and do not ride… they basically listen to what I say, build it and I test and go back to the drawing board. I’ve shown them hundreds of pictures of hits, hips, rollers, spines, etc. They know what they are and can see them but getting in the cat and doing it sometimes leads to VERY long nights of pushing. I cannot drive a snowcat… that could be one of the problems. My snowcat driver has been doing this for 20+ years, and he can make a nice little table for the kiddies in a heart beat.

My question is… Are there Park Design / Building classes offered anywhere? I’ve dug through everything in the NSAA, Googled everything, and have not found a thing about classes on teaching my old dogs new tricks. They want specifics… like pitches and slopes of landings, angle of attacks on take offs… I know what “feels” right too me from being a park rat for so long… but not the geometry of what they want.

I’m going to contact some of the other resorts in my area and talk to them and see what they are doing over the summer this week. But I was hoping I could find some other people in the industry here that might be able to shed some light on the subject.

The best bet is Cutters Camp, it's held at Tline every may and basically is all the park and pipe cutters coming to create some gnarly terrain and also fine tuning the techniques of making a good park.

I have a friend who is a consultant for building parks and has years of experience in creating terrain parks and teaching to terrain parks as well as coaching at the summer camps. He's the best in the industry for it. I'll leave you a private comment with his email since i know he wouldn't want me to post it online.

If Capitia means Tline as in Timberline on Mt. Hood....that is an excellent source...If you need or want other sources, I can also get you in touch with the Mt. Hood Meadows Grooming dept; I know the dept head.....I am hoping to start training as a snow cat operator as well as instruct this year...we have an amzing crew up there!!

If the groomers at Mt. Hood Medows would give me the time of day i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to speak with them. I'm positive there are classes or somthing that i can get my guys sent to. Hopefully i can learn some geometry of it, and some theory.

I've just seen nothing at the trade shows... and being a tiny midwest resort (I use resort LIGHTLY) but its hard for them to understand what I'm going for... I want them to witness a real park in all of its majesty! Then help me build a mini version on my hill

I'll be honest with this, Meadows doesn't have the best park or best design of park and i wouldn't go to them to find out how to build a park since they are still learning. I'd get advice from top of the line than learning how to build a park from bottom. Just my advice.

Either way he is definitely #1 in the industry, which is why id love to ride shotgun with him alone.

OOOOO you Tline snob!......LOL :) Yeah, I do agree, Tline`s crew is awesome and their features seem more precise. Our crew is pretty good though, did you see the park off of Vista this year? and later, we moved the pipe up higher onto Cascade...they did a great job. Rob is working with the guys at Tline pretty closely; those two resorts work a lot closer than people might think being "competitors" A lot of us also instruct fot Tline too....I think we are very fortunate here in Portland to have 2 really top notch companies like this.....Ski Bowl is decent too when they have decent snow.

We've got one bully and one bomb. Also have one flex-blade and fin tiller, and a strait blade with fixed tiller. Our bully leaks tranny fluid like a civ... =D its a good time!

I was merely offering what assistance I could. Dragon is a big boy and can take what ever advice or assistance he wants...Snocat Pat obviously has more expertise and information and that is great, but this is, after all a public forum and I offered what help I had access o.

Yeah, your comments on the qualities of our resorts is just opinion. You may have been joking, but you came across like an elitist snob. For the record I have been around a few ski resorts in my 41 years and I think both of these resorts do pretty damn good job both for the locals and the summer training camps. Granted the wages are not exactly thrilling, but they reflect the overall ecconomy of Portland, not Vail or Tahoe, or even Puget Sound.
As far as our terrain features and the skills of our grooming department, again, I ask if you experienced Meadows features on Vista and the superpipe this year? For that matter, what about Tline?

As i have said before, yes i have experienced Meadows and Tline this year. That's pretty easy to read when i say i wouldn't go to them for park terrain advice since i've seen what they build on a monthly basis. There are better terrain park crews to learn from, who have more experience and every year step up to better designs and flow.

Some resorts have strengths and weaknesses and i don't see meadows being on any top 10 NW park lately...so i wouldn't take them as the top of the pile to look at and consult with. people that start fights on the comp are just weak and pathetic and just want to make themselves out to b a stronger person...but they have problems grasping that if you say somthing on the comp. no one can really come to your face and do the normal guy thing and give you a good a$$ whipin(sp lol) ...but if u were to ever meet up w/ this person its probly some punk w/ no life and no confidence no friends....and just plain flat out a whimp...

Since all of this ugliness occurred in public, I feel it is appropriate to apologize in public....My apologies to the online uses who had to witness this ugly flamewar that i have been involved with and in my passion to defend my position, I lost my temper and self control and acted like a total ass. While I feel I was not wrong to attempt to defend my original point of view, I escalated this ugliness when I should have taken the high road and let it drop....for that I was wrong and I let my ego get in the way of maturity and at times I did behave like a child.

As a result of this, I have asked Gerard to delete my profile as I do not feel the damage done to my reputation will ever go away and from this time on, any post or reply I attempt to make will cause tension and I will not ever gain acceptance. Please try to remember the positive contributions I have tried to make here and forgive the negative impacts. This online thing just is`nt for me and in real life I am a very nice and super easy going guy. Several SBA members have ridden with me and I think will verify that....this online thing may just bring out a bad side. With that, I am posting a copy of the PM I sent to the other two parties involved with this ugliness in hopes that they will also call truce and forgive and forget.

you most likely wont care, but I am sending this anyway......things have gotten out of hand and in my anger, I acted like an ass. I am not backing away from my original point of view when this thing started.....I was not originally trying to start a fight, rather explain what I meant by my sarcasm, but emotions got too enflamed for that. I think wrongs have been done by all parties in this and I want to just end this now if for no other reason than for the other SBA members who do`nt want to see this crap. Toward the end of this argument I let my anger overpower my control and I said some stupid things and did behave like a child....I grant you that. I take back the intentionally hurtfull and insulting comments without recanting my explanations and defenses....it was wrong and for that I appologize. The personal attacks were wrong and not really meant; they were a reaction to my own hurt feelings for what I felt became personal attacks and an attempt to involve others outside of this forum in an attempt to screw me over through an abuse of authority. These arguments, no matter how heated should not be used outside of this forum for any reason like this. I will send this exact same PM to the other party involved as well as post it in the thread as my final statement on the matter.

As a result of this situation, I have asked Gerard to delete my account and I will leave the forum. I do this because I feel that as a result of this, I will never be treated fairly again and this will create tension everywhere I go on the site. I will post no further comments on this or other topics henceforth and I ask you to do the same and just press on and let this ugly scene fade away. I am really not a bad guy and in person I am a super easy going nice guy...this online environment just is`nt for me and as I try to fit in, I get sucked into all of the negative attitudes and end up acting like a jerk. You do not have to like me, but I ask that you accept my sincere appology.

Actually it’s for myself and my crew. Being a small resort though I'm not sure how many people we can send to the cutters course and to other training.

Kinda sucks that I started a post that led to this... Everyone has different personalities and such. Some people have a hard time with posting on forums because the written language cannot always be properly presented by the writer. On top of that the listener cannot with out clear comprehension grasp the individuals tone and annotation.

Egging people on is just as bad as continuing an epeen fight. There are not too many snowboard instructors on the site as I’ve noticed and regardless of anyone's opinion of snow wolf we are now down one more. Please people for the sake of your own character, please learn the proper art of debate, it is easy to resort to attacking someone, where it is much harder to justify your opinion with rhetoric.
