I think you can do it with a GPS - I don't have one but I've used one for hiking.

Yep, a GPS receiver might be what you are thinking of.
Mine has mapping, so it draws a little map showing where you are, and it can be set to record a track/trail of where you have been.
My dad has at watch that does this called an AVI watch. It does rate of descent, rate of climb, how many runs you have done, how many vertical feet you have done. It as an altimeter on it.

Vail and keystone offer those... its basicly a GPS system and they have a computer program to map everything... kinda fun, used it when they frist brought em out to Vail when i lived out there. It was real interesting to find out how many times we cut ropes and went OB when we still thought we were just on the edge.

Winter Park and Copper do it to... I haven't done it, but there are ads on the back of the bathroom stall doors.

eh, it seemed like a gaper attraction to me... i mean kinda neat if you only ski / board once a year, cause they give you a map of the resort and your tracks.

it's totally a gaper attraction... otherwise why would it be advertised on the bathroom stall doors? I remember when I was a kid my brother and I used to mark off all of the runs we had done at the resort when we went somewhere on vacation - so it probably is fun with kids if you're on a trip or something.
though if you happen to have a gps you use for hiking/backcountry, it'd be fun to play with on the slopes.
yeah i have seen ads on the bus. idk, if it was like free i could see myself doing it. i have seen the maps that the gps can print out of your run and it looks pretty cool for new or tougher backcountry runs.

I enjoyed it when they brought it out... they like gave a coupon for the Ritz Carlton employees in Vail to go try it. Somethin fun to do once i say... makes a cool thing to frame up and throw in your living room... Unless your like me and live in Iowa again and it just makes you sad cause you miss it.
=( ok i'm going to go cry under my desk now....

It may sound like a gaper attraction... but there are people who are sooooo serious about how many vertical feet they ski/ride each year that this can be big business. I know I saw one old-timer on TV bragging about some crazy number this season. And he was far from a gaper.
