View Full Version : Killington sucks

I live in vermont and i notice that a lot of the out of staters only mention killington when they talk about vermont riding. Personally, Killington is overcrowded and over commercialized. Anyone living in vermont knows that there is much better and cheaper riding at places like mad river glen, smuggs, jay, sugarbush, mt. snow, etc. If i was going to spend the money to go to a big mountain i'd choose stowe over killington anyday of the week. Hell, i'd rather go to Burke mountain than waste my money and time in the lines at Killington. If you want a good vermont riding experience, head farther north.

Well... I've only ever been to Killington (of the mtns in VT)and I'm sure you're right on the over crowded and over commercialized. My reason for going was that it opened way before the others and it was convenient and reasonable.
This season, we'll do opening weekend at Killy again. Will I do other weekends there? Probably not, I'd rather try the others that you mentioned, especially Snow.

isn't mad river glen skiers only?

But the bug K has the most terrain, which is super varied, killer parks, nice lifts/lodges and super nice parks, whats not to like? But the other mountains you mentioned are good too, but Killington doesn't suck at all.

I'm not really a fan of K-mart or mount snow. I think they are both extremely overrated. Go north. Sugarbush is probably my favorite resort in vermont. ASC came in and put in high speed lifts then left so it was back to normal. They get good snow and its not very crowded. Jay is good too and they get dumped on sometimes.

i'm from VT and to be honest Burke is the nearest mountain to me i'd much rather take a trip up to Jay, but killington aint that bad. Depending on when you go, during breaks and weekends it sucks, but if you live around the killington area just go to Pico if the lines are bad at killington

Killington is the **** if you know your way around... they have really good trees, some sweet out of bounds riding if you know what your doing, and some reallll good steeps, and some of the best jibs, parks and pipes in Vermont, Dont thrash on it cuz its crowded... just dont come holiday weeks or weekends.... There is so much mountain you can always find a space to yourself... Other than that though Stowe is an awesome mountain and Jay Peak has the best trees in Vermont

I've been to Killy it was pretty good. I liked Whiteface better though in NY. I want to try Stowe because it's about the same distance from me as Killy. Jay sounds great but it's alot farther north and I've heard it's pretty out of the way and tricky to get to.

ya killy has a ton of lines/people, stowe has a sweet set up n so does sugabush. sug is my fav. it has a big park with its own chair nm this seson they r gunna build more small parks around. Also, sug. has two mountains n they r building it up so it should b sick. if anybody rides there this winter we should have a sesh.

some of us like killington because of the season pass they offer... other than that it's over priced. If Sugarbush had a worthwhile pass for under $500 I'd be all about it.

all i get a chance to snow board is vermont n i think okemo is the best mt for riding, but mt snow is probably one of the best for riding the park. but the lines at both are a little long n okemo is a bit over priced, over all both are good choices for a week end trip
gunshow
09-01-2006, 10:43 PM
i take back what i said about the lines at okemo being long, it all depends at which side of he mt your on. the lines on the main side of the mt are a bit long but everywhere else are quick
Well Im sure Killington is okay, but Ive been once, a long time ago and my family prefers other mountains in Vt over it too. Ive been to three different ones in Vt... which one should I go to this season? I donno, I dont even know if i'll get to.

i don't think that Killington sucks. But there are SOOO many other places i would choose to go over Killington. I agree that it is waaaaaay to over populated and commercialized, but I don't think they are absolutely terrible. My favorite place to ride in vermont is waaaaay up north at JAY PEAK. i have not read all of the reply's but so far i have not heard a single person mention Jay. The first time i went there i was blown away. It was like another world. You can do the entire mountain and sometimes not see another person. Not to mention the glaaaades. they are to DIE FOR! Every morning i wake up and get there, there's like 3 feet of fresh pow, it's amazing and unbelivable! I live in plattsburgh and ride at whiteface 4-5 times a week, so getting over to jay is a treat. If you haven't been, i HIGHLY sugest you check it out. It's the closest thing ive been on the east coast to riding something comparable to the west coast.

If anything, you have to admit that Killington is the first to open, and the last to close almost every year. Check the books.
I never seem to have the problems with lines in Killington, and i am there almost every weekend. So i dont understand all the complaints there, i guess i do the same thing SPIN240 does.
Thumbs up for K-Town!:becky:

i've been out west to mammoth && it was ridiculously amazing. unfortunatly i can't get out there every season, but serioulsy, the first time i rode at jay peak, it made me think of mammoth. Not that it compares to mammoth, but jay is pretty friggen awesome considering it's on the east coast!

I've lived in rutland all my life and ive skied and rode killy all my life. yeah it can get crowded but thats why you go during the week. killingtons not that bad and if you have such a problem with that theres pico right down the road and theres never a crowd there. but still stop giving all our good vt riding spots away! if you sit there and spout off all the other amazing places we have they're going to turn out just like killy. jays one of the most amazing places we have and it might not be as expencive but its starting to get just as crowded as killy. i mean if you really dont want anyone in your way go build yourself a private mt.

Yo I lived in killington for about 4 yrs. and I will agree that from the week before X-mas to NY eve blow. and the 1st 2 weeks in Feb are bad but if you really want to know killington and why it see's so many visitors and why so many locals go ther hit it up in any weekday out of the dates I said and tell me what you think I belive you'll change you tune. no I agree that all the Mtn's you mentioned are good and Jay is one of the better spots in all of the US. (512 avg. inchs a season) besides for night life year round and food Killington is #1 in VT. Now this is only my opinon but I know alot of people that would agree.

i've been riding jay for the past couple years and i've never seen it crowded. weekday or weekend. i've yet to even wait in the tram line for more than.. 3 minutes. it def. can't be compared to killy. i'm not saying that i don't like killington, cuz i've been there, and enjoyed myself. but in no way is jay becomming crowded like it. Maybe i got lucky all the times i've been, but i've gone during holidays, breaks, && weekends and barely see more than 10 people a run. :D

Oh I agree Jay is the soul riders dream best glades hands down on the east. but the various levels of terrain and the parks on a weekday in Killington in march is still may fav. when you get to have that Mtn by yourself on late winter day after it snows, you see what the hype is about. Could just be I lived on that Mtn and rode it 90+ days a year so I was aware of the hidden sweet spots. anyways when ya really look at it other then the east coast south of VT. there is allways something on each Mtn. I go to that keeps me comming back. I think and agree that Killington is hell to be at on there busy days. In fact I can say for most locals that we'll see ya in than bars and meet ya on the Mtn Sun. afternoon or freshy's on mon 9am.

Killington really is a waste of time 100%. Three years ago, my ex and I were stoked to go up since they were open EARLY, but when we got there, we found that the terrain was pure ****. There was exposed grass/ mud everywhere. We left by 10am. Went again the next year because we got vouchers. This time there was snow, and mostly ice, but it was really crowded and the trails are mostly narrow...
Sucked!!!!!
I'm on the west coast now, baby! This is the good stuff!!!

my family(as in my rich grandparents)take everyone, like 25 of us to killington for like 3 days, so i get out of school for two days, and there is nobody there, then saturday its crazy. my school has one of those ski clubs, where 900 or so kids get on a bunch of buses and they drive us to mt. snow 3 times and okemo 2wice.those are the only times i go to vermont
if i were to compare those three, i'd chose killington,
it has the most varied terrain, although when i only got to go to okemo once, and i didn't look at the map and realize how big it was. so i didn't really get a good taste of it. from what i've heard smuggler's notch is great to, and

killington doesnt suck. it is over crowded on the weekends, but mid week, its sweet. i live there, this will be my 4th season. you cant beat it for nightlife in VT. im a bartender on the access rd and wouldnt trade it for anywhere in Vt. good people living there as well. sure there are other places to ride, stowe, jay, sugarbush, even over the pass at pico isnt too bad. find the secret stashes and you'll have some fun...

Alright well after reading this entire thread it has made me a bit confused as to where i want to take a week off and ride this winter. Killington from what you guys have said is that it has a lot of variety but is over commercialized, can get icy, and can get crowded. Jays up north sounds like a nice quiet place to relax and just ride which is what im lookin for but does it have park too? i want a nice mountain with awesome snow almost gaurenteed. I want long trails that i can just tear up as well as a decent park to hit some rails etc. Any reccomendations where i can find this golden mountain lol? Also to the guy hatin on jersey, not all jersey people are d bags.

True true but with 200 trails 33 lifts and 1100 acres to play with .You can get lost deep in the woods out of bounds on the busys days and not see a soul and still get freshies 3 days after a storm . Dont forget pico is part of killington if k-mart is packed jump on a shuttle and go to pico you are gauaranteed fresh and quiet times. little to no lift lines:lol:
