I just got back from an all day sesh at Beech today. It was terrible. The snow was good and it snowed 3" while i was there, but the terrain was awful. The park had 1 box that was leaning on one side so you slid off the first 5', all of the 4 jumps they had built had no lip and all ice on the landing, and every hip or drop through the main trails eventually got blocked off by the ski patrol. At least it wasnt crowded. I used to like Beech cause of the fast lift and generally low crowds but if its gonna be like that the rest of the season im going somewhere else.

oh really? i'm trying to go sometime this week up to boone. like thursday or something. and i'm trying to decide where to go. i've never been to beech so i was wanting to try it out. last weekend i was at app and hawksnest. liked them both. so do you think i should try out beech? or go back to hawksnest or app? i like long runs, and some jumps/small rails.

i would stick with hawk or app. I get weekend lift tickets to beech for 40 bucks so i usually ride there but after this weekend i dont think im gonna go up there anymore. The park was terrible. No rails one box that was leaning to one side and the jumps were horrible.

it says the halfpipe is open now. do they have a good halfpipe or is it crap? and is the snow their really icy, in the middle, or what?

I saw the pipe from the lift the other day.....
KaosrideR, of course their park sucks...... for one beech's emphasis isn't on park, or at least I didn't think so, and plus I didnt even know they had it open. If there was anything, then they JUST put it out there cause they have been working on getting more snow, not on their park.
Oh, and clash, beech is one of my favorite, for boone at least.
The snow can get iced over in spots but you just have to keep an eye out for those spots. Fast lifts, never crowded (at least to what I have seen), and cheaper than most....

does beech have good jumps/rails? like not huge jumps...but like middle size. app has like everything, thats why i like app, but its crowded, hawksnest has some good jumps, and some good rails, and nobody is ever there. so i'm trying to decide if i should try out beech, or go back to hawksnest, or app if its a week day

no, last time I went they had nothing setup. but thats cause they have been struggling to get more terrain open.
KaosrideR said they have some stuff setup, but not much......
App has good stuff setup, what?????
I was so unimpressed in their setup. THey had so little actaully there to ride. I mean the little small park had 3 rails and one picnic table deep in the snow they they got rid of later in the day. They had some good park features up, but not neary enough. What they had up was really sad compared to how much sheit they really have but just hadn't setup

in one park they had the stairs, the down flat rail, the flat rail, some big ass jumps. and the other park they had 2 c-boxes, a battleship box, and a few other's. yeah they do have alot more stuff, but they definitally had more stuff up then any other place around here.

They are down to 14 out of their 15 runs open. I really hope it wasnt their steeper black closed, cause that one was the nicest of the mountain.
I was there a couple weeks ago and it was really good, but it has been warm up their lately, so I assume its kind of slushy conditions.
As far as park goes, they are sloooowly getting stuf together. Theres really not a whole lot to work with. The park is small, the alst time I was there, there was a flat box, up flat box, a few jumps, and they were setting up more when I left. Since its been a few weeks since then, hopefully they have done somemore. Oh, but beware of the flat box, its so slow on the end so if you dont have a bunch of speed be prepared to slow down suddenly and get a face full of ****.
I will be up there either Saturday night or sunday all day.

i'll be up at hawksnest saturday night i think, and either app or hawksnest sunday from 9-4.

Yeah I think I am going to do the over night Saturday night thing again. We will go up there, ride Saturday night, get a hotel then ride all Sunday and leave at 4:30. We just havent decided which mtn to do for night and which for the whole day.
Its between Beech and Hawksnest. One for day, and one for night.
Clash, how much was that cabin rental thing. Like how much you think it would be for one night?
Clash360
03-06-2007, 01:27 PM
^^for the cabin rental check out www.vrbo.com (http://www.vrbo.com) they give discounts for renting later too sometimes. sometimes its 200 a night, sometimes 89. depends on location and size. but i'm going up late saturday, gettin there around 8, so i'll be at hawksnest from 8-12 cus its the only one that stays open untill 12. sunday we'll either do app or hawksnest, depending on conditions.
Clash360
03-06-2007, 01:31 PM
yo GA, alot of the cabins up there have a 2 night minimum stay. i havnt found one that you can stay for only a night.

yeah turns out we arent going up saturday night, staying that night then riding all sunday. The dude I ride with works at a radio station every sunday morning and he cant get out of it, so we will end up just riding all day saturday

yeah i'm no longer going up on saturday. just sunday morning at app all day. hopefully.

you're still going to app.
When I asked my budddy if he wanted to go riding this weekend his resonse was, "Well where do you want to go?, and if you say appalachian I am going to hit you in the nuts...."
We just dnt like only having like 5 different runs to do all day and pay MORE where its more crowded. They may say that there is 9 runs, but thats bull, theres only a few to really choose from, their ONE black is like a mellow blue, and its just not worth the trouble.....

yeah i know, their runs suck, and there really easy. but the snow is goina be bad anyways, and hawksnest, which i like their runs, nice and long, the snow will be crap there, because app blows alot more. but they have a **** load of features up in their parks compaired to other resorts around here. go to www.appskimtn.com (http://www.appskimtn.com) then view the live feed park map. they got a c-box, box, 3 rails, table, and jib thing all in the beginner park, then some nice big jumps, staircase, battleship box, flat box, on the upper park, and on the other side their fixing it up right now. so i'm just going to work on jumps and rails.

Yeah, but since I am learning park, not all of those features are hittable for me. What I would rather have is just a good park with a number of features and get better at those, plus building up a whole bunch of different tricks on what they do have.
and trust me I've been to and seen all of the NC resorts' sites.
You're right about snow conditions sucking.
The season will be over soon, its just not near cold enough here.
When the season is getting more and more over, Catalochee (or however you spell it) is going to be where its at. They do more snow blowing than anyone. If everybody remembers correctly, they were the FIRST to open of ALL the east coast. They are also one of the last to close, the last in NC I know for sure. It will be so crappy, but its still ridable, and thats what matters

ya catalochee isnt bad at all but last time i went their and it was soooooooooo packed. But hopefully beach will be good tomorrow. i'll let you know how the slush rides. ha

i've never been to catalochee, maybe i'll check it out.
but you said your just starting park. same with me, i've only ridden park 2 different days. and app is definitally the best place to learn out here, they have alot of easy rails/boxes, and the landings aren't steap at all, and they have small -- big jumps.
how's catalochee's park?

I havent been.
Beech's is okay, not near as many features as app, but enough to learn...
When I went to sugar they hadnt opened their park, and I havent been to Cat yet.
bball801

last year when i went to cat they had a really bad halfpipe, box, jump, kink rail, and some rail that look like a sewer pipe.

03-08-2007, 10:39 PM
alright just got back from beech. The park had 2 jumps (which one was really really bad), a small cylinder rail, a flat box, a flat down box which was setup pretty nice, and a box that was slanted. Their halfpipe was melted down so no halfpipe:cry: . The snow was awful but it wasnt their fault cause it was 55-60 degrees out their. Overall it was alright but you cant compalin cause it was free.

ya free as in you dont have to pay for it. Thursdays is mens day which is free skiing from 830 to 430. But by the looks of it yesterday, they wont be open past this weekend (it was a huge meltdown). O also i dont know if you said this but some 1 said that the box was real sticky and that they fell on their face the first time, guess what i did the same thing lol but the box wasnt as bad later in the day.

clash i need to go their. how far is it from beech?
Clash360
03-09-2007, 10:09 PM
hmm...havnt been to beech, but i think beech is somewhere near hawksnest and sugar. its on the other side of boone, closer to 321. probably about 10 min from the 2 story windys in boone. i guess its probably around 25 or so minutes from beech, but i might be wrong.
the runs are really short, i get down them really fast, the lines are long on saturdays, but i go up sunday morning's alot, and nobody is there, and they have the best park in NC. alot of rails/boxes/jibs to chose from, and they have some big jumps/small jumps too. so if your trying to just freeride, dont go, but if you wanna jib it up, head over to app.

so i went to app. and it was alot of fun. they had 2 kicker's over 20 feet. and a kicker around 30 or 40 feet, and alot of rail's and boxes. the snow was slushy, but it was fun, didnt hurt when you fell, and it was a beautiful day.

Man beech was just dying when I went saturday. They may have another week but not long.
The park was kind of sad as usual. That one small cylinder rail was there. It was actually my favorite one cause it was good to just learn different tricks on then hike back up and do it again. The long flat box was cool, but since the snow was crap it was hard to get up enough speed to do anything on. They had one step up gap jump. It was maybe 20 feet. The problem with it was that it was in sad condition and was not made to jump anymore. Me not knowing this until after I hit got my already sprained ankle blown to **** when I didnt clear the gap. Later in the day a few guys got out there with shovels and fixed it, but not to hit from the front side. You were supposed to hit it at an angle from the side off a much better take off.

yeah well. i went off a 20 foot kicker at app and somehow did a 540. i was practicing 360's all day, and over rotated it, got all the way around to the 540, and landed it. i was amazed at myself. but yeah app had the nicest setup they've had all year.
