I think they're important. Even if you're not prone to falling, you never know when that out-of-control skier/boarder will come flying down and take your feet out or collide with you.

Dude I didn't think they were important. That was till I tricked this box, and half way through I saw someone sitting on the landing...Long story short, I tried to correct instead of decapitate this fool. I ended up caching an edge and slamming the back of my head into the snow. I fell asleep for about 5 mins maybe and since then have always worn a helmet!!

I have a BMX/skateboard helmet I use for biking... would that work just as well?
Wearing a helmet would be a good idea, but I don't want to shell out an extra $50.

I once knocked myself whilst riding the pipe. If I wasn't wearing a helmet my brains would have been splattered all over it. I got a concussion then I went to work. That was a weird night.
I think they are a great thing. I heard a saying by a bike helmet tester that went "If you don't think you need a helmet then you have nothing to protect anyway."

and if you do get a helmet, don't do what i did and neglect to bring it with you one time when you go boarding. last time I went, I was planning on sticking with some beginners the whole night and helping them out, so i figured, "hey, I'm not gonna be doin anything crazy, I won't need the helmet." so when I got there I decided to take a quick run down the mountain while my friends were gearing up. long story short, my night ended about 100 feet down the first trail i went down and i ended up with 6 stitches in the side of my head that would have been easily prevented if i had worn my helmet.

i alway wear a helmet, because doctor says it will keep me form hurting myself. literally, because of hitting my head skateboarding, BMXing, getting a stray hockey puck to the back of my head at practice one day (i removed my helmet whiel gettign some water), and yes snowboarding. basically he says that my next one or two concussions could cause permanant damage, so i sure as hell aint risking it. now i just wish i had my helmet sooner!
man and they just cost soo much. whats a good helmet to get. one that is comfortable, light, breathable, and wont limit my sight?

I had a RED HiFi. Good helmet (saved me on many occasions) except it made me look like a freaking storm trooper. Now I'm rocking Pro-tec (black, not white). Just as good, just a lot lower profile.

helmets probably do keep you safe. my beef with helmets is that wearing them should be the person's choice rather than a resort's or a contest director's. if you wanna wear one, fine. if you don't, fine. this is america, not stalinist russia.

I think that if a contest makes you wear a helmet it is probably due to liability concerns. If you hurt yourself you may be able to claim the course was badly designed and unsafe etc and sue them for $49,882. Stranger things have happened. I don't know any resorts that make you wear a helmet but I think it would probably come under the same reasoning.
Of course you always have the choice not to enter or to not ride there if you do not agree with the rules.

Until I saw "Satan's" post, I was begining to wonder if I was the only one on this board that doesn't like helmets. Sure they keep my head safe, but they anoy the **** out of me, they are so uncomfortable. I think the only time I would ever whear one, is riding back country where there are alot of clifs and rocks.
But I'll never wear one at a resort.

yeah, what's up with this helmet craze? it's like if you put a hemet on you will be invincible. people now wear them riding a beach cruiser to the beach. it's so weird. growing up nobody wore helmets doing anything. now people don't let their kids go play with little Mikey down the street without sending them out the door with the helmet stapped to their head. now people give me **** everywhere i go because i don't wear a helmet. reguardless if i'm skateboarding or riding my bike. ****, i don't even wear a hat when i snowboard, it's way too hot. it's definitly everyones personal opinion but stop preaching to me and everyone else who doesn't wear a helmet.
i will agree that it seems all the OG riders dont wear helmets. not that i am claiming to be OG or nothing. all younger and newer riders seem to wear helmets more often.

i agree, helmest r not cool and they r uncomfortable as ****... i never wore a helmet getting down to business on my bmx as kid or while getting chased by cops 4 skating up the local parking lots...and i couldnt believe when they started making kids put on a shell just to ride their bike--id see kids with football helmets on their GT and laugh my ass off...but after seeing a good friend like Duff drooling on himself after a routine jump, and a serious concus on my part, i changed my mind....but i could give a **** if anyone else wears one, just dont go preaching to me about NOT wearing one either and we'll call it even...im done, im going sk8tin--without a helmet... l8tr!!!

good to know that this forum is not filled with a bunch of idiots. I took a group of my freshmen high school guys on a 'snowboard only' trip to a small mnt in NC a couple of years ago. I told them, 'NO SKIS and HELMETS' were the only requirements for the trip. It's totally a smart move.

helmets are very important. only phony riders or insanely good riders don't worry about helmets either because either they only ride for style or they are just too good to fall. a couple years back i went over a drop off and i didn't know it dropped cause i was coming over blind so i was out for a good 10 minutes. got a helmet and did the same thing another time without the 10 minute nap. if you need a confidence booster..get a helmet bitches.

I dont think anyone is too good to fall. I am have been riding for a while now, and hardely ever fall, maybe once a day. I took a hard spill last season and hit the top of myshoulder and the side of my face. blackedout for 10 min wake up with blood all over my white coat. cause i ripped one of my piercings. long story short would not have happened if I would have had a helmet.

Snowboarding helmets are extremely important! Take this from a person who might be partially brain damaged had I not been wearing my helmet two seasons ago when I caught an edge coming off a jump. I landed on my side and knocked the wind out of myself with my arm and then slammed my jaw into the snow of the landing. I bruised my arm and my ribs, I also chipped my jaw bone and had a serious concussion. I didn't know what happened, what day it was, or how long I had been there - all I knew was my name and that it was a Tuesday. After suffering from a constant headache for a week I was told that if I had not been wearing a helmet that day things could have been much more serious.
All this to say that I believe that helmets are are good idea even if some people think they look dorky. I'd rather look a little less cool and save some brain cells.

I wear an R.E.D. HiFi in white. It is really comfortable and now i won't ride without one. I hit my head pretty hard before on ice(i live on east coast) and rails and stuff and its saved me alot. My helmet was really comfortable and light so it doens't feel like your carrying a football helmet on your head.

Its all a comfort and mind set issue. Personally, I don't feel like i function as well with a dome cap on. If I'm committed to what I'm trying then I won't need a helmet. It's when you get that mind set that "hmmm, i dont know if I'm going to make it," that you're going to get hurt.

I just laughed my way through half of this thread after seeing some of these posts.
First- "imakeskiierscry" if a skiier cut you off, why would you try and do a backflip right away? Talk about not using your head......
Second- "BGrichard912" that is the most ignorent statement I have ever heard. Only very good riders and phony riders don't wear helmets..... are you kdding, pro riders probobly take harder hits than you ever will, because you have to take hard hit to bget good. (granted there are a select few pros that do where helmets). And your also saying that every rider that isnt good and doen't where a helmet is a phony?
OKay I'm done being a ****. But if hemlets are what your into... fine by me... Just don't justify wearing one on wether your good or not.
Besides, I could still brake my neck with a dome piece on, but I'm not wearing a neck brace because of it.

wa, wa, wa, that's all i hear from you people. i could have died if i didn't wear my helmet. get real. i little piece of plastic isn't gonna save your life if you go off a big drop and land on your head. what about snapping your neck or back. if you want to wear a helmet that's cool with me, but im sick of people telling these lame ass horror stories. what if i didn't wear my helmet when i fell down. it's so lame. if you fell down you might bump your head. do you see any street skaters wearing helmets? i don't think so. growing up skating in Philly is way more dangerous than riding on snow. try riding a skateboard down handrails in the city. if you wear a helmet for a confidence booster than you're wearing it for the wrong reason. i hate when they make people wear them for comps. it's my perogitive if i want to take that chance. this whole helmet thing, is one big sceme for the industry to add something else to make more money. look at the stats, the injurys are going up not going down. think about it. most people think that if they wear a helmet that nothing can happen to them, and thats bull****. i've had about 10 concussions and my face has been reconstructed twice, and i will never wear a f@#king helmet. just be aware of what's around you, and look before you leap off of something you have never done before. that's one of the reasons you don't see us so called "good riders" wearing helmets. an inexperienced rider is the rider who needs the helmet if they don't what the hell they are doing. and if you knocked yourself out twice on the same drop, than you're an idiot and shouldn't be snowboarding in the first place.

I noticed at Whistler a few years ago, you were not allow to ride in the park without a helmet.
I would have thought it would be like that at a lot of North American resorts, the way you guys are so keen to sue for anything.
Satan
09-08-2005, 06:00 PM
yeah, but there is a disclaimer on the ticket saying you can't sue the mountain for anything. but you can sue someone if they run into you and you get seriously hurt. it's like going to a hockey game and getting hit with the puck. you can't do anything, because you should have been paying attention.

So you're saying no one who's a good rider wears a helmet? Sheesh, thanks....
I don't think helmet useage is in any way reflective of riding skills - most of the people I hang out with wear them and some of them are really good, some of them not so much. I'm surprised you'd even say that living in steamboat, because I knew some excellent riders and skiiers there who always wore helmets.
Also, your argument that a helmet isn't going to help if you break your neck doesn't make sense. That's like saying that you shouldn't wear a seat belt, because it won't help if your car gets smashed by a tractor trailer. Neck breaking situations are far less common than head hitting situations, and if people would rather not have the head pain, what's the big deal? It doesn't mean they're bad riders.

Ok, this is my overal observation about talented riders and helmets.
I do notice alot of very talented riders that wear helmets at resorts. Wearing a helmet has nothing to do with talent. But then when you start looking at profesional riders... it becomes more of an image issue, because pro snowboarders are walking billboard, they help sell their sponsors products, and are suposed to look good doing it. It looks goofy as hell seeing Craig Kelly doing a city rail with his helmet on... It just looks stupid, and thats why I dont think he will ever be as marketed as JP Walker or MFM. Being a pro rider, wether you'd like to believe it or not, is about looks as much as skill.
Jeremy Jones, does alot of back country, he wears a helmet when riding back country, but i doubt you will ever see a video part where he hits a 30 stair rail sportin a dome piece on his head. Shaun White Always wheres a helmet, then then again, he is the only pro I can think of that has reached superstar status wearing a helmet 24/7. And you don't see him in to many video parts Jibbin.
I just wanted to put this whole "only good riders don't wear dome piece's," to rest. Its not true, but when it comes to Superstar Pro status, I think there is more of an image factor about it as well.

Wether you hate it or not, thats how life is. When your selling somthing, you have to look how that company wants you to look. Most companys have a certain image they want to project. And with such a big market in snowboarding for retail companys.... it will always be like that.
kelly
09-08-2005, 08:10 PM
Yeah, I know, that's why I respect people who go against the grain. If shawn white wants to wear a helmet, and doesn't let the sponsors bully him into not wearing one because it's uncool, he should get props for it.
Benjb
09-08-2005, 08:15 PM
But you have to think too... Shaun White is sponsored by a Helmet Company.
kelly
09-08-2005, 08:22 PM
Yep, but I don't have a problem with people benefitting from doing what they would do anyway. It's like if people wouldn't sponsor kellen because of his tight girl pants, and he was like "fine, I want to keep wearing my tight pants, I'm just gonna get sponsored by a girl pants company!"
I think it's good to see people benefitting from doing things that aren't thought of as the "right thing" to do to get sponsored - way better than people changing their style or helmet wearing or whatever in order to acquire a sponsor.

idk, I don't think there that important, you jsut have to learn how to land/crash. but I can't be impartial, b/c I have a grudge against helmet mfrs so.
I bought a helmet(Spent way too much on it)and after one light fall the whole back cracked, and they told me that it must have done it's job if it cracked..i think that's BS. why not just wear a motorcycle helmet then it's a lot sturdier
If your gonna drop that kinda $$ it better last

09-11-2005, 03:35 AM
it's all choice. if someone wants a helmet to protect themselves to the extent of the helmets ability, then let them. if someone wants to risk it and not wear one, or they are confident enough, then let them. i coudl care less if it is because of sponsorship deals, i never really give two-****s about what people are marketing half the time. it's riding to me, and all that matters is if i have fun doing it, certain gear or not. pretty much all of us wouldn't be doign it unless it was fun.

haha i'm too poor to buy a helmet. If it's really windy i put on my hood over my beanie and droop my head on the lifts. Goggles are also good at keeping your face warm... better than sunglasses.
Oh and the candy's right here... the white powder is uh... sugar... hehe

you'd think you could get a helmet out of the parents. I mean, I could always convince my parents to buy safety devices.

my parents pbbly wouldn't care if i got seriously injured snowboarding... lol

aw, that's so sad.... If I had suggested wearing a helmet while skiing when I was in high school, my mom would have gotten all excited and run out and bought me 4 :)

Hell, I'm old and my mom is always going on about how glad she is I wear a helmet :) I think the stuff I do scares her, cuz she was a pretty hardcore skier for a long time. You should look for a helmet sale - they have the same kinds of deals on last years models of helmets as everything else.

when i hit my first jump, all I remember was going up, and coming right back down..on the back of my head...wow that hurt. so my dad convinced me to get a helmet, he even bought it, that hi-fi audio one...what a POS now, I'm like forget it, it's not worth the $$$ for a one shot deal....

Wow, you're bitter about that $ thing. I figure it'd cost more to have head cracked open surgery than to buy a new helmet.

09-11-2005, 06:42 PM
i wouldn't mind $40, but anything more than $60 for a one time use helmet is ridiculous. plus if it breaks that easy i fail to see how it's protecting your head.
kelly
09-11-2005, 07:10 PM
Well, I've taken a few falls on my helmet and it's fine - I've had mine for 2 seasons, so I wouldn't call it one time use, I think you just had bad luck.
It protects your head if it breaks because it is absorbing the force of the impact while it is breaking, rather than transferring the force to your skull. It's the same physics concept as those volvos that are designed to crumple in the front so that you don't feel as much of the force of the car accident - while it is breaking, it is absorbing momentum.

kelly
09-11-2005, 07:59 PM
Er... I don't know... it was on sale, it's made by Capix.
if i ride with u are u going to make me wear a helmet
??
kelly
09-11-2005, 08:58 PM
Nah, I don't make anyone wear helmets. Everyone I ride with wears them though, so you might feel like the weird non-helmet freak.
i was looking at beanies earlier this morning and i found this awesome DC one and planetearth. i hope they will still look cool in person

Yeah, most helmets look stupid on me. I just gave up. :)

lol yea i always look stupid in helmets also. But safety first right?? right??
kelly
09-11-2005, 10:01 PM
That's what I figure! Plus, I look kinda silly normally, so it's hard for something to actually make me look stupider :)

I'm getting one this season. I don't know why I don't have one for snowboarding, I have one for rock climbing and always wear it when I'm climbing. The first season I went snowboarding, I was coming down the end of the run. and turned my board to stop. While I was skidding to a stop, I accidently rolled over onto my toe edge and it got stuck in the snow causing me to fall face first into the snow really hard. I folded myself in half (literally....I'm flexible) backwards and smacked myself in the back of my head with the edge of the board. I was okay, but dazed....still...I don't know why I don't have a helmet.

Well, snowboard helmets have those handy ear warming pads. You should be able to find something more in the $40-60 range though!

All I need now is a helmet company to sponsor me... I go through 2 helmets a season since each one is only good for 2 impacts. So, how much impact does a tree branch count as again?
SnoChick
09-12-2005, 12:48 AM
Yeah, I land on my head a lot... and no, I wasn't trying to go inverted either...
OK, and the branches come out of nowhere in backcountry and hit me smack in the helmet too...

Depends on the size of a tree branch, I hope - cuz mine has encountered quite a few :)

if that's the case, then i might want to look into replacing mine. i took a few good diggers last year. one was a fast rail hit,t he other i was messing around, caugth and edge near a tree and smacked the back of my head on the tree. i would have been really ****ed up by the tree if it wasn't for that helmet. it was some cheap ass thing, but it did it's job, suprisingly

If I'm with a group of people, and they've all got helmets..I probably wouldn't mind too much, I just don't want to be the only one, or among the few wearing one...ya more interested in how I look and what others think of me instead of how scrambled my brains will be when i hit that jump, and my head hit's the hard snow/ice again...DOH!!?

Asked my friend (he used to work for Protec). A branch (good size) would count as at least half an impact. I miss having him work for Protec, I used to get $80 helmets for free or no more than $20. Now I have to buy my own helmets.

its pretty important to wear a helmet. it not only protects your head but also absorbs shock that could break your neck, trust me, they come in handy
