Where to study and board in New Zealand

I am planning on studying abroad in New Zealand in the fall, and was wondering where I should go. My options right now are to go to Auckland or Canterbury, I could possibly dig deeper if there is a better place to be? How decent are the mountains around Auckland and Canterbury, and how long is the drive? From what I have read so far it seems like Queensland is the place to be but what else is good? Hit me up if you have anything at all to offer.

Canterbury. Mt Hutt is only one hour away. Auckland is four hours from Mt Ruapehu (only slopes in the North Island). Failing that, you could try Otago University (in Dunedin)...there are alot of slopes in that district. Wanaka and Queenstown are close to there. Hope this helps dude.
