yeah, i live in NC and go to all the resorts here...they all are decent but i would suggest taking a trip to snowshoe WV, its pretty big compared to NC but its a drive for sure....it would be worth it though they have cupp run that is 1.5 miles and 2 terrain parks...so its pretty fun

Well, i mainly just go to NC ski places cause its a 4 hour drive from where i am anyways but sugar and beech mtn are the best two i think... beech is higher than suagr so it snows more and they have a better park and also a REALLY fast lift... but sugar is bigger and has more challenging slopes but a sorry park and the lift takes for ever...
here is the website thingy skisugar.com and skibeech.com

my vote would be beech, i havent really timed it or anything but i think u get more riding time there. Have fun.

no way urbn the east has good parks, and the massanutten park in VA is infinatley better than snowshoe's, if u dont know who joe genovese is he is one of the worlds best park designers and worked june mt. for the las couple of yrs. he worked the cutters cup last yr which is where this elite park crew bilds a ginormous superpark and pros ride it for a mag phot shoot. any way the man is ****ing good and he builds the park at "nut", by far the best park in the south/mid atlantic

Ok you can't compare snowshoe and massofnothing. The fact that every person in the world of mountain biking and snowboarding in the area refers to it as massofnothing should tell you something. My dad asked his friend how it was and he described it as this "it sucks balls".

I vote for snowshoe it is the tallest mountain around, most trails, and the park when i was there this past week was great. The limited snow though is keeping them from putting a lot of stuff out but it still had some huge stuff that massofnothing wishes it could compare too. The jumps in silvercreek alone eat the nut up. (maybe i should rephrase that :p)

well the fact that prospekt industries and monument snowboards consider it the there home mt and all their pros ride it for filming, should carry some weight granted their is a huge problem with the amount of terrain they have to work with at the nut but i will defend that place to the death, i mean snowshoe doesnt sport a fifty foot kicker with a channel cut into it, nor does it have a twenty foot tall quarter pipe nuts got my vote for reall fcuk snowshoe the fcukin park designer broke his back on his own dnam jump last yr not to mention the kid that almost died in spruce glades last yr on that top hit. guess its all about preference but i prefer not to break my bones cuz of shtitty jumps so im at the nut at least once a week

Haha if u ever met the park designer for snowshoe ud know hes a tool anyway! I highly doubt anyone films at massofnothing.

last time i went to massofnothin the only semi-good thing there was the park

whatev man i kno what im talkin about im friends with the peeps from prospekt why dont u check the site www. prospektindustries.com or go to www. monumentsnowboards.com both are board and clothing companies that ride at nut or go read at capitolboardroom.com and u will see where tru park rats go. not tryin to flame u but u did try and shut me down on the whole filming thing so go check that ish out.

no argument on slope comparison b/w snowshoe and nut but parks i have somethin to say about

not sure where ur movin to but in VA there are two good ones wintergreen and nut, then Snowshoe (the best riding in the area)and Canane in west VA, Wisp is a like 2 hours north of DC i think, NC has like 4 or 5 but Beech and Sugar have the best runs while hawksnest and app ski mt have best parkso theres a lot but most of um only sport a couple if any good runs and u parks are kinda on preference NC parks and wintergreen are all good for beginners with smaller features but nut and snowshoe fluant big features for experts. dont kno much bout wisp, never been

Wisp is a short hill on the side of a lake. Never snowboarded but raced my bike there. Their are resorts in PA 2 hrs from DC and NOVA that have decent parks from what i hear.

Laundrew
01-30-2006, 05:37 PM
don't go to wisp go to 7springs, if you are coming from DC its the same distance. The park at wisp is ok but all of the runs are really flat.

Laundrew where do you head to mostly? I'm @ school at mason and have a season pass to wintergreen but sometimes want a shorter trip from up here in nova.

sorry...i lived in utah 10 years and then georgia 10 years and have since finally returned to utah again in the last year for college, anyways...16 years snowsport experience thanks to a Utah born and bred powder junkie of a father...and i hate to break the news, but there is no best resort in the south, nor the east for that matter...anyone whos experienced anything like Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Nor-Cal, Washington, Idaho or Canada should tell you...anything south or east is for the birds...and ugly, small, weak, smelly birds at that, save your bones and hop a plane ticket, screw the cost...it's well worth it.

yeah thats why i mainly gonna try and make a couple of roadtrips out there this winter.

Treble Cone New Zealand it doesnt get anymore South then that

prodigypark51

north carolina is pretty much as good as it gets for southern skiing go over to banner elk and check out beech mountain and sugar mountain sugar has more trails and a better terrain park, but is more crowded has slower lifts and isnt as nice. Beech has less trails and a worse terrain park but faster lifts and is less crowded also sugar is more icy than beech. anyways, i would rather go to sugar than beech but you should also check into wolf laurel its a small place with little crowd and there are about to expand the mountain and it is cheaper its closer to boone i think. but if you count snowshoe as south then go there no doubt

To be honest, yeah if you must ride in the south, take a trip up to snowshoe, wv or VT...but if you can, just go to Colorado.

I grew up in NC and started and learned to ride at Sugar Mt which is I would say the best in NC because it has a mile and a half run if you go down a certain way and when they are at their best on grooming the park its good practice...plus if you learn to ride ice all the time, when you get out west it is piece of cake...cept the amplitude of the riding is way higher out west cuz the mountains are, way bigger! And you got less fear if you know you're gonna land in a pillow of powder versus straight up ice, I refer to it as the downhill hockey rink, cuz I used to work at a place called cataloochee in the NC mtns.

But I wouldnt have had it any other way, no regrets that I grew up and learned in NC, it makes you tougher for when you go out west and you will be able to rip a lot easier.

I live about 2 hours south of Boone, and i would definately have so say it's a toss up between Ski Beech and Hawksnest in Seven Devils. Beech is definately a fun little resort but the terrain park leaves a little to be desired. Hawksnest on the other hand doesn't have very long runs, but it makes up for it with their terrain park. Usually they will have almost half the mountain set up as a park. Those are my favorite 2 and i guess it depenends on if you wanna hit a rail or just carve.

Last dude that posted,

If you think hawksnest or beech are the best in NC you obviously have not been to anywhere out west. When you gotta ride in NC dont you want the longest run possible and best terrain park? With that in mind, its obviously Sugar, you ever been there?

Get used to taking 3-5 mile runs out west then tell me which is your favorite, ok?

Peace,

D

PS-You grew up in Brevard but go to UNCW, so maybe surfing is more important to you, or no?

I'm actually really bad at surfing. I try though. Snowboarding is definately my passion. Anyways, the only reason I don't like sugar is the crowd. It gets about twice as crowded as all the other resorts in WNC and i think the terrain park is pretty small. I like beech for the combo of a decent terrain park, the "High Speed"lift(dunno how much faster it actually is, but it is a little), and it's not nearly as crowded. I started going to sugar almost exclusively but then i went to beech and just really liked it. Sugar is a great resort too though. It's well groomed and does have a nice lengthy run. I guess, having never been out west(Tried to go last year but couldn't get the money for it. Schools too expensive) i'm used to short runs and ice.

if youre going to uncw, I would get a surfboard, lots of surfing to be done if you go there. Yeah i hear what youre saying about the slightly higher speed lift at beech but its all relative in comparison to out west. You gotta go to somewhere big out west for sure, then you'll have that different perspective on things. It is well worth the time and money invested for a trip out there to go try it out. I am probably actually moving out there again in Nov...and I lived in CO last winter too..but this time I am staying for good.

Good luck @ UNCW

****ing cataloochee. Driving from GA sucks balls. Everytime you want to ride you have to wake your ass up early in the morning, drive there, ride all day long, and once it closes take that long drive back home.

sugar usually opens between nov18 and nov30 but cat will definatly open on nov 17

Sweet. I think that I may actually decide against sugar mtn for ski beech just because the season pass for sugar is over $600 and I hear that it is too crowded

i feel for you guys. my own personal vision of hell consists of me with all of my riding gear stuck in MS, SC, NC, GA, FL, AL, TN, etc.! gotta give it to you though...you got mad love for riding if you can make it work in any of those places!

get me out of GA
09-18-2006, 08:05 PM
Hell yeah man. I cant wait until college and I can go to a campus that is out of GA. I do what I can to make it. Work all the time to afford it and go with some buddies to NC which is a 5 hour drive. I got to get up at 4 am to get there at like 9:30 and ride until closing then drive back home cause we all got work the next morning. We are either very dedicated to riding, or completely retarded.

I have been to just about all of the NC spots and i have to say sugar is one of my favorites and also a lot of people also go to winter place, for me it is about a 3 - 4 hour drive so i will just usually go up there for a day and some back at night. It kind of depends of what your style of ride is, like if you just ride and no terrain. I like to do terrain and i think snowshoe is one of the better ones for a sorta of a short drive. Have fun whereever u go!

in the south...id have to say as far as NC, i work at Sugar, and the longest run is 1.5 miles...unfortunately it takes like 15 minutes to get to the top...beech is fast and fun and has a pipe, but the pipe isnt ever groomed....as far as parks...App and Hawksnest, hawksnest got 9 new rails last season...and App will have a 16 stair handrail up this year... and PS. SUGAR OPENS TOMORROW...
