i'd recommend this for anyone that can't run because their knees suck or whatever. Anyone for that matter. It burns twice as many calories as the treadmill and I love using it for cardio along with the treadmill.

That's what Im talking about if anyone doesn't know the term. I have been doing 30min-45min on the elliptical and then running a mile on the treadmill, and then lifting for a good 30-45 mins with light weights. Great workout if you don't have time to go to the gym.

yeah, and you get to look like an idiot too.

We have one at my house, but I never use it (or workout for that matter). It probably does burn a lot of calories but I dont have the patience to stay on it for 30 minutes, I get bored after 20 seconds

The thing that running has over and eliptical is that all the small stabalizing muscles in your legs and core get worked out with running. But on an eliptical, the machine gives you more support and stuff, so your stabalizing muscles aren't as strong.

I don't know the name of it, but there's this one machine that makes your legs move as if you're skating. I don't use it, and never would. But God bless the man who created it, because I always see a bunch of women at the gym on it, and they got their nice b00ties sticking out and bouncin around while they're on that thing. Greatest invention ever in my opinion.

looks like it would work good. i'm really flat footed so my feet feel fractured after a long run so i just take a few stops on the run.

I read in Mens Health that the best exercise to increase matabolism and really give you a good work out is to do invervals of running at full blast for a short distance (a couple hundred yards) then a slow jog. Also, running up hill and stairs is supposed to be reall good. Machines are stupid, I rarely ever use them. They baby you so you can isolate muscles when you work out, but all the small stabilizing muscles that are critical to balance and ect. suffer.

I use ellipicals too. what you're really suppose to do is not bounce when you run on it.

just keep your legs moving and try not to bounce, that way it works your legs harder

If you don't like running for whatever reason ditch the elliptical and hit a pool. Swimming laps will kick your a$$.

Meh i would prob only do it if I really had to. In ohio though you can run outside almost all year long so I would def run outside. But I never workout or run for that matter. I also generally try not to climb more stairs in a day than cigs I smoke in a week... lol jk but seriously i hate working out.

:twitch: No, you cant run year round in Ohio. Unless you like to run in 20 degrees. Whatever. Anyways, the elliptical sucks. I tried it once, its gay. Just use the tredmill. You can burn just as many calories, if not more on a tredmill if you actually jog/run. From what I seen while on it, youd have to be going pretty intense on that gay thing to burn same amount of calories.

the elliptical has its place in the gym but if you are going for hardcore workouts leave it alone and let the folks who read and workout at the same time use them.

Nothing says "focused on a workout" like sweating and reading last months "Good Housekeeping". The only thing that could make it better is when they put on that bomb ass track from Fergie or Ashely Simpson.

I think the gyms should have a "Gaper Day".

Gyms have probably or close to the same amount of gapers as major mountains do. I see one everyday. I LOVE the people who come in and get on the bikes and tredmills in jeans. Yes, thats right, JEANS. Ive never seen anyone go hardcore on a elliptical, why you ask? Cause you just dont. If you wanna do some real cardio, you run.

My two favorite gym things are people on cellphones and the people that lift at like 10 reps per second.

And this is why I love living at the beach...running in the sand and swimming in the ocean is an awesome workout!

BTW, I hate elliptical machines with a passion, but I can see how they're good for people like my best friend, who has had multiple knee surgeries. She can't really walk for long distances, let alone run!

i just got back from running on a track with a few friends, track running is not my style, if im doing any running, its at night when its cold on the street.

in the summer i like swimming laps to strengthen my shoulder (breast stroke), its also scary when youre under water and winded, forcing you to get in shape or die.

^You prefer running on a street to running on a track? Are you nuts? ;)

I prefer track running to running on a street for sure. So much better for your joints!

I've been just doing the bike deal and turning up the resistence. Trying to get my knee joints strong. I just hurt my knee, like putting lots of impact on it hurts like a bitch. I actually haven't even exersized it since I hurt it ha ha. Maybe I'll try to go skate today or something. Best leg work out ever.

track running still pounded my shins and ankles, but it probably was magnified 100 times by the fact that i was bored as all hell its so monotonous (sp?). running on the street gives you a change of scenery, even if you run the same route every night like i do, it's still a little different each time.

If you are having shin problems while or after running check your shoes. We have a local shoe shop that will actually study your stride to determine the best type of shoe... and I don't mean Nike vs. Addidas. They look for if you over pronate (sc) or not and things of that nature.

Trail running is by far my favorite. Sadly, not a lot of good trails around here!

Yes you can! Where I live it does get down into the 20s somtimes but it never stays that way for too long. And yes it can get colder than that but again it never stays that way for long. Besides I dont consider 20s to be that cold if you are running and kicking some ass and have a few layers on youll be just alright. Im talking about places you can run because its snowing a ton or iceing or cold rain things of that nature. There generally isnt allot of that in columbus although we have had out bouts of ice this year. Maybe im just a hardass... jkjk

I know what you mean. But I dont like to run with a lot of layers on, and just dont like running in the cold.

i run when it's cold, the only thing about it that bothers me is my knees get red and itchy, like so itchy its debilitating.
