in my ripe old age of 15 yrs and 11 and 1/2 months i have come to the conclusion that we as american youth are horrendously athletically incapable. during this week in gym we had to run "the mile" all that is asked is that you try your hardest and finish to the best of your ability.

there were ppl like myself that ran sub 6 minute miles (myself ran a 5:32)

but there were other kids that couldnt even do half a mile. my gym teacher told me that . 20 of her students alone were not able to complete the required distance.

also. there were ppl in my gym class who couldnt do one pushup or one situp.

thats pitiful.

does anyone else out there feel that kids these days are really that horrendously unfit? (is unfit a word? who cares!)

for me i cant run a mile, but thats because i have knee and shin problems, where it realy starts hurting from she shock of every step. i could run if i needed to, but for a gym class or whatever, i just dont put myself through the pain. but then come the push ups and crunches/situps, and i beat out the "athletic kids" in my high school.

my school is getting rid of all the "unhealthy" food in our school, such as the ice cream machine which i used to visit daily and other unhealthy shiit. and their reasoning is that american students are over weight and unhealthy. but im a skinny girl, who could run the mile in under 7 minutes that likes to have ice cream. so yea, i agree with you that kids are horrendously unfit and because of that, other people get punished.

We only have reduced fat food and such at my school.

We probably have less than 10% overweight kids at our school and that leads to one of the better sports schools in the county.

I run about a 7:20 mile FYI.

I never do any of the physical fitness testing. My gym teacher is my football coach and he lets me do w.e i want. But i work out nearly everyday so its not like im lazy.

the last mile i ran was a 6:31
but there were kids who were completely incapable of running a mile in a efficient time. the worst time was 15 minutes.
i mean isnt there like some type of self awareness that they should probly get into shape for health reasons? or even just to stay fit?

Ya im a senior and i get credit for "helping" out in a gym class in my high school (pretty much so the teachers can do even less). And last semester we had around 40 kids and prolly less than 10 'failed' the mile and this semester we had about 40 kids (freshman, not being stereotypical or ne thing) and i think 10 kids passed the mile, its really bad and makes me really sad, i don't have a fast mile but its better than like 9:30 or 10 which is wut the girls get to run it in and the boys get 8 (soph n above get 7:30)

Connecticut requires sophmores to take a fitness test. 'Presidential times' are faster than 'health' times which if you don't pass, you're considered to have failed that part of the fitness test.

I feel pretty bad though, a lot of kids at my school are on the "bad" side of the health spectrum.

Gym class is pitiful in itself. The activities you do require little athletic ability and yet you still get kids that can't do them. We have no mile timing requirements or anything like that because it wold just be pitiful.

And I love having no gym. Athletic study hall for varsity sports= winner.

Most of you have the right idea... Not all those who are unhealthy are overweight. I have two people that I work with, that weigh around 150-170 and are over 6'2". Both of whom have diabetes.

In high school I was unable to run a mile in under 11 minutes. I think my best time was 10, and average was around 12. It was horrible. Now, on the other hand, I run 3 miles in around 21 minutes. I used to weigh 210 at 5'11", and now I'm a trim 177. When you ask why most people who are overweight do nothing about it, you've got to realize most don't care or don't think about it.

i weigh 210lbs i can do 45-50 pushups in a minute/60-65 situps in a minute im 5 foot 10 or so and i can run the mile in about 8 minutes

i think our schools are all slacking ..we have candy machines...junk for food ...and its all nasty...i still eat it but..i try to stay relativly in good shape

I only run when chased...

But seriously, it has been a long time since I was in high school so I can't really comment on "todays" youth, but even in my day it was bad. I was good at sprinting, not long distances but I could still do the mile in sub-seven (not sure on actual times but it was sixes).

When we had to do the mile, once we were finished we got to do whatever we wanted for the rest of the class. It was a shame to see 15 minutes into the class that people were still walking the mile (because they got so winded from running they literally had to stop for a while). Also, it was these same people that once done, they just sat down next to the building or bleachers and talked.

First of all, I think it's a shame to use running a mile as a gague of a person's health and fitness. Some people just aren't runners. Just like some people aren't swimmers, or snowboarders, etc. At any rate, you should be able to walk a mile in less than 22 minutes. We used to do an 8 mile walk for MS that we finished in less than 3 hours and we were REALLY lazy about it.

The problem has it's issues rooted in the way society has designed it's suburbs, it's addictions to junk food, TV, and video games, parents babying of their children, etc.

When I grew up, I lived on a small city street where there were other kids my age. After school, we all went out and played. Our mom's could keep their eyes on us. We didn't eat too much fast food, soda was not the drink of choice at the dinner table. Video games were just coming about, and my dad didn't care if I didn't want to go play... he made me go outside.

Today, suburban communities are spread out, there aren't as many kids in a close area for other kids to play with. Parents have to drive everyone everywhere for short bursts of activity. Soda is evil. In the midst of the business of carting kids here and there, there is no time for dinner, so McDonald's it is. And, if little Bobby doesn't want to go tonight, it's ok because Mommy thinks of it as a welcome break.

All of these things contribute to an overweight society. It's the rare family that overcomes these obstacles and challenges their kids to be healthy people. But unfortunately, just as the majority of people in this country raise children of lazy minds, they raise them of lazy bodies!

When I was in high school, I ate whatever I wanted (never anything healthy) and was super lazy. The only thing that kept me in shape was the fact that I was on a couple of sports teams. I also had a super high metabolism at the time which helped out a lot. If I didn't have that, I would just be the average fat high school kid.

Kids just don't care. I know I didn't. I'm definitely not in the shape I used to be in, but I've been able to maintain a lot better than most people. All the fat kids in high school were the ones that didn't play sports, or in some cases, just sucked at them.

i run cross country and can run the two mile in about 12.20 so that would be 6.10 a mile. but i have abosolutly NO arm muscle absolulty zip nada. since i cycle and run cross country i way a mere 110 lbs. and am 5'7 or a little taller. when it comes to benching, i havent dont it since freshmen year, but freshmen year i had the 2 max rep at 65 lbs. haha. an i can only do 2 or 3 pull ups.

so i dont really except some linemen or wrestle running the mile under 7 or 8 minutes, but the people that cant even run it are pathetic. o and for the people that say "im fat, but i dont no why or i dont no how to quit". change ur damn eating habits cause ur obviously doing something wrong

I was a fat kid in high school at about 200lbs (I'm 6 foot). I don't think that HS is conducive to being healthy or losing weight. I started working out seriously when I was 19 and dropped to about 165lbs with a max dumbbell press of 90 an arm for 5 reps (I was also running 4 miles a day). I stopped working out consistently when I was about 22. These days I rarely go to the gym and although I've lost a lot of my muscle I still weigh about 165.

I agree, I have four kids and I do try to limit the T.V. and video time. But I can tell you they do watch and play more than they should. I only allow my kids to go outside when I can go out with them. We live in a pretty nice neighborhood but, not far from here is a pretty rough area. A lot of crime shootings ect. We had some jerk for 3 mo. a while back trying to pick up kids until they caught him. I do however try to play with my kids more often we play games ect. I guess for me it's a safety issue I'd rather they be in here playing games or watching t.v. than letting them go outside and wondering where they are. p.s. hopefully we will be moving to the country soon then they can play out all day.

Agree with this...

A major factor in the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of many people these days is influenced by the design of new neighbourhoods... A lot of the new suburbs have a lot of cul-de-sacs, which means, even though if by chance some kids want to play on the road theres a place for them, its further to walk to get anywhere, which means that people are more inclined to jump in the car to go somewhere that may only be a hundred meters away, but because they have to leave the cul-de-sac and go around the streets may take 30 minutes or so.

Also, along the line of babying children, when I was in primary school we live about a ten minute walk from school. My mum used to walk us to school every morning and collect us and walk us home at night. After the first couple of months, myself and the neighbours children would do it all on our own. We had it firmly drilled into us to only cross at the pedestrian crossing, not to talk to strangers and stay away from dogs and things that we didn't know what they were and all the other obvious things. But these days a lot of parents are 'too busy' to walk their children to school and they are either too spoilt or the parents are too worried to let them walk to school on their own because of 'stranger danger'.

Even though video games, television and junk food are all causes of obesity, we can't actually blame them. It was all around when I was growing up, but my parents limited us to one hour of 'screen time' a day. Which meant afterwards we did our homework then went out to play. We would make mazes with grass clippings, climb the big pine in the back yard, run races, play chaseys and all the other silly stuff kids can think up. And when it came to McDonalds and other junk food it was a once a month priviledge. Parents these days have a lot to answer for. Yes we know you can't protect your children from these things totally but its their responsibility to at least limit it and make sure their children are developing correctly.

Soft drinks, chips, sweets and biscuits were special treats, if we had friends coming over after school we would walk in to find sliced fruit and yoghurt on one plate and fresh vegetables chopped up with home made dip on another and it was free for all. And all this made us appreciate the junkfood even more when we did get it.

The statistics on obesity these days are appalling... Especially when it comes to childhood obesity... As obvious as it sounds those obese in childhood often turn into obese adults, which means the stats will keep getting worse...

Man thats a little bit of a rant... Its one of my pet peeves... sorry about the bad spelling, and for repeating 'these days' so often.

heres my opinion. that fast food is a lie.

if you eat a good dinner such as turkey, gravy mashed potatoes, salads you will take iin abot 800 calories. thats more than a mcdonalds cheesburger.

its about getting your off your a$$ and do something. i understand not everyone has athletic ability of a superstar and some people dont like sports. but when poeple complain that they hate gym pick an activity that you like than. we have a bunch of choices from workin out, football, water polo, lacrosse, canoeing in our pool.

i run a 830 mile. i hate running. i have the worst stamina. but i am damn good at hand eye coordination. as long as people try you can walk a freakin 15 minute mile at least.

also i hate it that schools are taking away fatty foods. i love my ice cream and god dammit if i want it you better give it to me. our rights are being violated. obviously its not like omg but fat kids will always be fat unlessz they get off your a$$.

well after tremendous workouts and what not ive dropped close to 50lbs now andim in a hell of a lot better shape than most of my friends which is funny cuz i used to be the fata55 oh well..
and i hate how schools take all our good food away to i mean we used to havedeepfried good sh!t now we get baked fries that are like cardboard and cold
our so-called-chicken (more than likely seagull) is nasty doesnt even taste good even if you add ranch...which is watered down here to save money lmfao...
ghetto school right?
we dont have any good sodas in the drink machines(which i dont care because i dont drink sodas anymore) we havent had any candy in the candy machines until really recently i think over the last few month they started putting a little bit unhealthier foods in there((the company that owns the machines)) mainly because no one was buying the chips that were in there
