Should I be offended??
ok so I was away getting my medical done today for joining the Territorial Army with a bunch if folk who all knew each other (which made it not too fun cos they were talking about family stuff and such like)
well anyways on the way back home I was sitting next to this guy Zak and we're chatting away and we start talking about sports and spare time stuff and what have you so of course I say "...oh yeh I play badminton and spend a lot of time with my dog and skating wi my bro and I really like going snowboarding..." and he's all like "...hold the phone... snowboarding?! I'm not kidding but when I first saw you I was like 'oh yeh she must be a snowboarder or something'..."
I was just like WTF?? how can you look at someone and say "oh look a snowboarder"
I mean i wasn't wearing boardpants and carrying my board I was just wearing black trousers and a grey v-neck with a white top under it!
ok so he was right but still how the feck could he say that he just automatically thought that?! i found it so odd...
(sorry i thought i'd rant bout this for a while cos it kinda annoyed me but didnt at the same time...)

I don’t know what you look like but I would bet some cash (euros to or what ever your currency is!) that it was a compliment. The best way I can describe it is that people who snowboard usually lead a slightly more alternative lifestyle and with that slightly alternative lifestyle comes certain things such as different coloring of hair, piercings, a certain style or clothing (what some people might call punk), and maybe an athletic physique. So probably based on one of the above he was making an assumption that you were a snowboarder could have said skater, bmxer, or inline skater. So probably not anything offensive. When I tell people I’m on the varsity golf team they usually laugh because I skate snowboard other stuff that like they ask me how I could be good at an "old mans sport" but hey just another stereotype not a bad one though in my opinion.
Sorry if that doesn’t make sense haha I tried :)

It's not surprising. I mean, it's easy to tell if someone skates or surfs because of their dress, hair, shoes, ect. So why should snowboarders be any different? I agree with Shred, I don't think he meant anything offensive. I mean, it's not like the looks you get for being a punk or a surfer. I'm not even one of those punks who have mohawks and stuff-- I'm a "non-image punk," meaning I don't wear the crap that the stereotypical punk does-- and I get nasty looks all the time. And I freakin live in a beach town, with "beach" right in there (Virginia Beach), and some people still give me sh*t and have misconceptions for being a surfer. I just don't let it bother me anymore, because people are @ssholes, and they're gonna judge people. That's just the way things are.

lol yeh i get what you're getting at but the thing is i wasnt looking like the usual me... i usually dont blow dry and straighten my hair or wear anything other than jeans and hoodies and i certainly never wear smart shoes lol so thats why i didnt get it (although i do have a good few piercings but all on my ears and not all with earrings in them) so i just didnt get it

That's probably why: you have a more natural and relaxed look than doing all the crap that some girls do before they ever step foot outside.

ive met a couple girls down here in florida(well 2) that snowboard..and they just seemed like they would be the type...hence why i started talkin to them...found out one also plays lacrosse...which is pretty cool too...
but honestly...take it as a compliment...most people confuse me as a surfer here...but i dont surf..

maybe its just me and my friends...but I tend to notice that snowboarders (of course not all of them) tend to act and dress more outrageously or differently then other people. Its kind of an attitude sort of thing...especially if the person is really into snowboarding.
but not all snowboards act like that...its just that when most people meet me they almost immediatly associate me with some sort of board under my feet. And I dont mind cause my stereotype happens to be true.

okay, I thought what started this thread in the first place was just really stuypid, but oh well....
Today, I got that same ****. I was out waiting to do end of the year testing **** and a friend of mine said that I looked a lot like a snowboarder (or at least how he pictures it...). I thought it was gay as hell. Not that he made that statement and I was offended, but I didnt think you could classify a certain "look"

The guy might not have thought you looked like a snowboarder at all.
Could have been a line. You say you really like snowboarding so he thinks he'll compliment you by saying you look like you snowboard. Apparently it backfired though haha.
(Not you GA, I'm not suggesting your friend was trying to hit on you hahaha).
