View Full Version : Cannot get up

I started riding about a year ago. Every time I fall the only way I can get up is rolling over and pushing up. I cannot for the life of me get up any other way. Any tips on how to get up the normal way?

DragonUSMC

the normal way? to me that is the normal way, get up from your knees... But then again i've taken a beating over the years and getting up from my butt on a flat surface isnt exactly easy anymore.

Tuck your board closer to you and rock your body weight forward and roll your way up... thats what i have been left to do... my back just cant take getting up that way on the flats anymore. God i'm getting old...

But anyway getting up from your knees is better for a few reasons… 1. you can follow the skier responsibility code and then watch for up hill traffic as you begin your decent again. 2. uses less energy 3. easier on your body and joints 4. your board wont start slipping down the hill cause you can dig your toes in hard.

Then again i had a few REALLY fat kids in some lessons and they cant get up from their butts either. But that is for obvious reasons.

yeah, getting up from your knees is better, at some degree, I like to get up from my ass, I would say, but that's because if I get up from my knees I start feeling sluggish but when I have to push harder my body keeps moving, kinda like taking a break when you are working out.

now I push with my hand closed to a fist as if I would be punching the ground, I found that easier for me because I can use the extra distance that I won't get from the palm of my hand, now this of course will never be easy on your wrists so start packing wrist supports or just get into some wrist strengthening regime

I call it the "normal" way because I see everyone who falls on their butt just push themselves up so I thought that is how every one does it. So far I have never seen anyone get up the way I do.

DragonUSMC
05-31-2007, 04:22 PM
depends on where they are falling... if you're on a steep incline then yeah its fairly easy to get up from your butt... but if not then its a bit harder.

are you not very flexable? if not start doing streaching exercises over the summer and build your flexability... this will make it much easier.

Wow, I'm surprised so many good snowboarders on here have trouble getting up off their asses. I've never really put any thought into how I do, I just do it.

How to get off your ass:
1). Make sure you are on a steep enough incline. You dont want to do this on a flat surfice. The steeper the easier.
2). Dig your heal edge into the snow.
3). Sit up (like you're doing a sit-up)
4). Place your leading hand on the ground slightly behind your ass.
5). Have your trailing hand out towards the front of you.
6). "Roll" over onto the base of your board, using your leading had to help push your ass up, and using your trailing hand to help give you leverage.
7). Stand up and ride away.

I used to have troubles getting off my ass too cuz I'm so big and tall. I just forced myself to learn, and found that this works for me. So enjoy my 7-step program.

I still don't understand the difficulty with getting up on a flat surface. There's no way my triceps are 10x bigger than everyone else's.

punkrock89
06-01-2007, 05:57 AM
I just need a slight slope now. Wait, nevermind. I'm pretty sure I can get up on flat ground. Most places I ride usually have atleast a small slope. The main problem I had was my really long legs, and just plain being a big ass mofo. It isn't that hard though once you learn the right way you gotta push and stuff.

You might want to look at how wide your bindings are set apart. It might be too far apart making it harder to get up.

lol, this thread is going down the drain...

If you cant get up then you need to go work your core out... If you have trouble getting up it means mainly your top 2 abs are completely jelly and your fat... Go get to the gym..

I am by no means great shape but my top 2 abs are crazy defined compared to the keg below them because of getting up on a snowboard.

I love when I get people in a lesson and they cant get up themselves... I want to refund their money and tell them to come back when they have gotten out of the cubicle for the last 10 yeras.

Yeah, work those abs...that is what will make the biggest difference. Your core muscle group is so key to everything in snowboarding.

I think this is the hardest part of teaching...people get frustrated with this part...

one method that works for some people is the push pull method...put one hand behind you and push down on the toe edge of your board with your other hand...push the edge firmly into the ground and then pull on the board upwards while pushing off the ground with your other hand....thus balancing you out and pulling you up...eventually it gets easier and you won't even think about it when you're getting up..it just takes a little while

What frusterates me is when my students think I have to pick their fat butts up all day...

"what are you gonna do when the lesson is over kid!? Lay there and die?"

one of my last lessons of the season was just like that. but he was like 17 and hated life because he couldnt get up and was wearing jeans...

WOOOORRDDDD UP... I always ask people that... WHAT are you gonna do when Im not around

After enough people like that I made it a point that I will only help them up for the first 3-5 times during a newbie lesson and then they are on their own. I could care less if they sit on the snow all day. Im not pulling a muscle in my back or breaking a finger because some fat jackass cant get up toeside OR heelside.

Its a sign of not enough effort I feel.. so if they arent going to try, why should I?

haha my instructor got so damn frustrated at me because I was unable to get up from my ass. I kept telling him I couldn't do it. So he would always have to come and lift me up. So I asked if there was another way. He said turn over. I did it and got up so I was like geez why didn't you tell me that in first place!

DragonUSMC
06-07-2007, 09:55 PM
yeah i tried that with that last kid... infact i usually only show people how to get up form their knees. (its easier and safer for the newbies) But he couldnt roll over either...

yeah i think i ended up pawning off my lesson to a new snowboard candidate actually.

Cr0_Reps_Smit
06-07-2007, 11:19 PM
Yea i had this one kid how was pretty big, couldnt get up if his life depend on it. It sucked to cause it was a school program so everytime he fell i had to stop, hop half way up the hill and help him up. it go to the point where i sat him down forced him to learn how to roll over and get up on his knees. He was a good rider too, just couldnt get back up after he fell.

punkrock89
06-08-2007, 03:06 AM
When I first began riding, I couldnt get up off my ass, but I forced myself to learn, and pretty soon, I had no problem. In snowboarding, whenever I cannot do something, or do it well, I'll keep working on it untill I get it down.

You'd think that people would be atleast smart enough to wear track pants or something that doesn't completely soak up water.

I first learned to get up from my butt by putting one hand on the front edge of my board between my feet and the other on the snow behind me. pull on your board and push off the snow at the same time...

In my level one lessons, I usually tell them I will show them two ways of getting up. Since they're already sitting, I show them how to get up from their heel first. Whoever is still on the ground from that, I show them how to roll over and get up from their knees. This normally takes about 5-10 minutes and after that I don't have to spend anymore time on it.

DragonUSMC
06-08-2007, 04:18 PM
I usually wait for my first student to fall before i teach getting up. =) just to keep the lesson flowing and to make the "fall" fun / learn from it.

The key is to have a good amount of slope. There's a lot of people, including me, who can get up off their asses with very little or no slope, but to start out with, get up at a place that is fairly steep. Then work your way up to flat ground.

i can only get up the "normal" way when i still have that momentum from before the fall so i dont have to kill myself trying to put my hand behind me and then push so i can get up. then usually i just fall back down again =)

Snowolf

I have no problem getting up either way, but sometimes when it`s icy and i can`t really dig my edge in all that well, the board wants to slide away as I am getting up. A little trick I sometime use in this situation is to place my glove under the board`s edge. This acts like a "parking brake" Once I am standing, I can yank the glove out and go.

Other than that, my advice is to dig in the heel edge as good as possible, scoot your ass up as close to the board as possible, walk yourself up on your hands and if at all possible, grab the edge of your board and push/pull yourself up to a squatting position on your board then stand up.

Requill
01-21-2008, 09:21 PM
I never really land on my ass if I fall.
When I buckle in, i'm standing no matter what. My tip would be that you should get your board closer to your knees, have your hands slightly behind you and much up shifting your weight, now you should be in the snowplow position and bingo.

dirtyjerz
01-22-2008, 05:29 PM
put the back hand in between your bindings, pull as hard as you can then inch the other hand closer and closer to your butt and you should pop right up. most kids i tell to do this, can do it. some are too weak to move their own bodywieight, i just let them get up from their stomachs, or i help them up.

well you would think that, but if the kid/adult is becoming very frustrated with the whole concept of getting up, they wont have any interest in the actual riding aspect. id say abotu 30% of the kids i teach need help getting up.

i thought the same for awhile, i think im gonna start instituting standing up into my standard "B" lesson.
