View Full Version : Photo lovers and takers... question.

I was wondering if there would be any interest in a bi-weekly or monthly photo contest? No prizes or anything would be distributed but it would just be fun.

Example, the first person comes up with a theme. The contest runs for 2 weeks or a month and then the person who came up with the theme decides who the winner is. Participants canpost up to three pictures during the timespan. We could work on the honor system about them being taken in the time allowed. Old pictures you took that fit the theme, need not apply. The new winners job is to pick a theme for us all to work on and they get to vote at the end of the contest.

One thread for each bi-weekly/monthly contest.

I think it could be fun. I do it on other forums and it gives me good reason to get out there and shoot some photos.

Any interest?? Would this be something the collective would like? I don't know of any professional photogs on the site, so this is just fun and could ultimately be somewhat evenly balanced (depending on skill, equipment, etc.)

For an example, one of the themes I am taking pictures for on a different site is "Motion". I only have one entry so far but here it is:
http://aycu06.webshots.com/image/18525/2001753300823658509_rs.jpg

I took this at Teton Village where this is one of the things for the kids to annoy their parents to spend money on (look how stoked that kid is!). Nothing special but themes make you more aware of things around you. You tend to look out for certain things more often.

Let the feedback on this idea roll in....

I guess I could be in on this. I always have my digital camera on me....cant really contend with some cameras, but I would still do my best. I took these the other day...I thought they were decent:

I'm all for it, as long as it's honest photography and not whoever is the best at photoshopping his/her photo to look incredible (compared to what it really was).

HELL YEAH!

Can we do a contest for the best Gap/ Rail shot thats a secret for your town or whatever?

The pic doesn't have to have someone hitting it at that time, but its like the "Subconscious Rail Spotting" thread, just snap a shot and put it up here.

I say this becausse yesterday I went skating with a buddy of mine who's moving to cali on a couple weeks and he showed me a secret gap in my town thats been kept a secret for a long time and the only people who know about it have either dissapeared (friend of mine who ran away, showed up missing on TV, and is now probably in TX) or is just about to move, and I figured I'd show you guys because you wont know where it is either. I've never seen anyone hit it, and I doubt I ever will, a friend of mine was just about to do it, but it as night, dark, and he was far too drunk and high to make it.

I am taking pictures today after I get off work and they should be up tonight...... It's the **** I promise.

I'm game too, I've been kicking myself for buying a new camera and not using it.

GA, that's a dope idea, but I don't get any snow here, but I bet I could find some great places that would be nice with some snow :)

yeah the gap that I know of is for skating..... we'd never get enough snow to do urban stuff

The question is, who decides the first theme? Does it start next Monday and go for 2 weeks? a month? people who are up for it, I need some feedback.

Advres, I think you should come up with the first theme since it was your idea.

Then the winner each week, selects the new theme after that.

I think it should run two weeks. I think a month is to long.

Alright that sounds fair as long as everyone is cool with it. I will come up with a theme and make a post Monday morning about it.

Also, can I post in my own theme, but just not be able to vote for myself or should I just sit it out? No worries either way.

I think the person who comes up with the theme should be allowed to post. That is only fair. It isn't like they have a advantage or anything.

I say you guys shouldnt be allowed to vote for yourselves at all. First week let all the entries get in, then add a poll, for the 2nd week, and allow voting to occur that way.

Well they could, hypthetically, pick a theme for which they already have good photos for.

THe first one is pretty good as far as balance and stuff goes, but the guy riding doesnt have enough lighting on him. But I like how you have the wall going off into to the distance to show depth perception.

irideROMEnow
06-28-2007, 05:13 AM
yea the first one was a spot that we found behind a building and the sun was setting

punkrock89
06-28-2007, 05:20 AM
Yeah, if you had flash or a light on the rider it would've been better, but overall pretty good.

BTW, where at in VA do you live? I'm from the Beach.

i have no idea where that is

punkrock89
06-28-2007, 05:34 AM
Alright... It's kind of near the boarder of Chesapeake... a few miles away from Lynnhaven Mall. Not too far from Oceana Naval Air Station... Does that help at all (that's a pretty broad area I just described). If it doesn't help, then I'm like 20 minutes inland from the Ocean Front from I 264.

irideROMEnow
06-28-2007, 06:00 AM
oh.. still dont know but whenever i go ill email u or something and we should skate at the boardwalk or something

punkrock89
06-28-2007, 06:12 AM
Ha! That's funny. Skate at the boardwalk. :pound: You'd only do that if you wanna constantly dodge tourists and get hassled by the pigs. Besides, the gaps in btween the slabs of cement are MASSIVE, and you'll easily get your wheel caught in it and bust your ass. Even on a longboard it sucks. But hit me up anyway, there's a few shows coming up at the Ocean Front that you might like.

In my opinion, I think you should be able to do normal dark room type stuff in photoshop (like cropping, changing the levels, etc) but not actual frankensteining of photos.

OK, the darkroom adjustments is settled. Now onto the voting thing.
What I suggested originally was the one who came up with the theme, gets to pick which entry they like the best (Not their own) and that person is the winner. The winner then gets to pick his/her own theme for the following contest and is then responsible for making a new thread and being the one to decide whom the winner is. Is that how we want to do it.... or do we let the whole community vote for every theme?

Haole
06-28-2007, 06:36 PM
I think that the person who picks the theme should be the person to decide who wins. They know what they're looking for in the theme.

advres
06-28-2007, 06:50 PM
^ Thtats the way I feel. And the person who picks the theme can post pictures, but they can't claim themselves as the winner because that is just cheap.

punkrock89
06-29-2007, 12:08 AM
Yeah, I agree to that. And, like I said, I will give my unbiased, expert opinion and critique the photos-- so it's not just, "that pic sucks" critiques.

just an idea...
what about your favorite picture of a mountain [when it gets closer to the season]
or your favorite "calming" outside picture.

these are old but just for example (sorry the first ones so big):

Hardly. There's still gorgeous scenery on the EC, you just gotta know where to look. In the New River Valley region of VA (the area in which Virginia Tech and Radford University lie) has a lot of natural beauty. ...As does West Virginia. No, our mountains aren't as prominent as the ones out west, but they have their own beauty and mistique.

do photos have to be taken in this time frame, for the topic or can they be older pictures that fit the description?

advres

I suggest that they be taken within the timeframe. The reason is, because this gets everybody out shooting.

Of course, there is no way to tell so it is on the honor system.
