I’m going to start with – Make sure this is something that YOU really want to do… not your brother, girlfriend, boyfriend, buddies… whatever. When you start playing with inverts you are playing with a greater chance to literally break your neck. Then you won’t have to worry about tricks… unless you plan to do tricks in your wheelchair.
Alright… if you’re still reading… then you are ready, or too dumb to know better.
Now for some copy and paste…
The main difference doing them in a park compared to doing them off a cliff or BC stuff is that you have to have your speed and your air time locked on in your head. The part you don’t want to hear is that there isn’t a way for me to tell you how long that is or how long your rotation time needs to be.
One thing I notice when people start doing these for the first time is that they use their hands to "throw" themselves into the flip. (I started this way too.) But this cannot be done off of a normal side table and what not. (20 - 40' table) Because what it causes you to do is turn your shoulders too much, and you'll land doing a 90 deg. rotation. This is the part that plagued me for a year. Finally I figured out I’m not doing a front flip like I would on a tramp... I'm doing an in air cart wheel.
OK now for the fun part… there is no way to ease into these. You’ve already done it by practicing on a tramp and what not. So now it’s time for guts and glory, it’s the only thing you’re going to have in the air.
Try and find a SUPER fluffy landing… like under a snowgun, after a roller in the BC after a 14” dump, etc. These things will make life much easier. If you are forced to start on a table… well then it’s going to be a bit harder for you. (See front flips guide)
1. Have more speed then usual to clear the table. Pick an appropriate tabletop or kicker. You don’t need 80’ and you don’t need 10’ pick something in the middle that you are comfortable with
2. Contrary to popular belief, you want to go off the lip strait with a slight forward facing turn in your shoulders. When your board is halfway off the lip and back half still on, you will want to START your flip… Starting too early gives you fun things like this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09r_quUkImo
5. You will start off with a back ward lean ( I like to superman these things so think of it more like that) once your body leaves the lip your board should be at a slight angle and body square to your direction of travel.
6. Your arms can be out for balance (flying like, this is the way I like em) or close to your body like a diver on a diving board. Both work fine… main thing is to keep you’re back arched and head looking strait up! Cool thing about backies is that you see your landing VERY early in the trick so it can help you determine how much more “spin” you need.
7. At this point you should be thinking, “Where am I at? Do I have enough rotation at this speed / height?” If you are saying no… then you have a really cool trick you can pull off. (One of the reasons I like laying back flips out) If you are under rotating you can do one simple thing… Suck in your knees. It will immediately increase your rotation speed.
8. Your landing should be coming up here soon. Extend your body to stop the rotation. Your shoulders will be facing forward so you will have to “push” that 90 deg. out to get your board strait. BUT if you came off the lip strait with your shoulders slightly turned… you will probably only need to push about 30-40 degs. As your body flipped your legs almost lag behind and keep part of that position.
OK… well that’s that. Again, OVER or UNDER rotation of these things could result in your SERIOUS injury. Make sure you really WANT to do these; don’t let anyone push you into doing something that you don’t feel like you can do. Build your way up… oh and if you’re not riding like at VERY LEAST 40-50 days a year… you probably shouldn’t be attempting anything inverted.
