Mt Hutt Struck By Avalanche

Mount Hutt skifield has re-opened following an avalanche that struck several skiers this morning.

Skifield manager Dave Wilson said the field had been shut following at least one avalanche that hit the South Face of the field earlier today.

He confirmed "two or three'' skiers had been caught up in the avalanche, but said no-one had been injured.

Skiers were taken to the skifield carpark and a head count conducted by skifield staff.
Around 2000 skiers were on the mountain, enjoying otherwise perfect conditions, Wilson said. <br

Skiers at Whakapapa Witness Climber's Fatal Fall

Paul McLauchlan, 34, of Wellington, New Zealand, was ascending Grand Gully, an extreme skiing route outside the ski area boundary, as part of a training run with the New Zealand Alpine Club when he slipped and fell. Witnesses watched on in horror as he tumbled 300 to 400 meters to Broken Leg Gully at the base of the ravine, where despite ski patrol's CPR efforts the man perished.

Mt. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts marketing manager Mike Smith indicated that the area where the incident occurred was closed to skiing and snowboarding on Saturday due to a lack of snow cover. It is the venue for Mt. Ruapehu's annual extreme skiing and snowboarding competition.

National Park Police are investigating the incident.

Alexa Loo calls an end to her 14-year snowboarding journey.

Two-time Olympian Alexa Loo, whose late-career popularity was as much a product of her ability to market and sell herself than any sustained results on her snowboard, announced her retirement Thursday at age 37.

The affable Richmond native, who competed in the alpine events of parallel giant slalom and parallel slalom, made her World Cup debut in 1996, but didn't reach the podium until 10 years later when she finished third in a parallel giant slalom at Kronplatz, Italy, a month before the 2006 Olympics.

She finished just 20th at Turin, but was almost more upset that few people really understood how much work she had put in to get there or what had happened to her along the way.
